The Promise of the Holy Spirit

1In my first book I told you, Theophilus, about everything Jesus began to do and teachG3303G4413G3056G4160G5599G2321G4012G3956G3739G2424G756G5037G4160G2532G1321 2until the day he was taken up to heaven after giving his chosen apostles further instructions through the Holy Spirit.G891G2250G3739G353G1223G40G4151G1781G652G3739G1586 3During the forty days after his crucifixion, he appeared to the apostles from time to time, and he proved to them in many ways that he was actually alive. And he talked to them about the Kingdom of God.G3739G2532G3936G1438G2198G3326G846G3958G1722G4183G5039G3700G846G1223G5062G2250G2532G3004G4012G932G2316 4Once when he was eating with them, he commanded them, "Do not leave Jerusalem until the Father sends you the gift he promised, as I told you before.G2532G4871G846G3853G846G5563G3361G5563G575G2414G235G4037G1860G3962G3739G191G3450 5John baptized with water, but in just a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit."G3754G2491G3303G907G5204G1161G5210G907G1722G40G4151G3756G3326G4183G2250G5025

The Ascension of Jesus

6So when the apostles were with Jesus, they kept asking him, "Lord, has the time come for you to free Israel and restore our kingdom?"G3303G3767G4905G1905G846G3004G2962G1487G600G1722G5129G5550G600G932G2474 7He replied, "The Father alone has the authority to set those dates and times, and they are not for you to know.G1161G2036G4314G846G2076G3756G5216G1097G5550G2228G2540G3739G3962G5087G1722G2398G1849 8But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."G235G2983G1411G40G4151G1904G1909G5209G2532G2071G3144G3427G5037G1722G2419G2532G1722G3956G2449G2532G4540G2532G2193G2078G1093 9After saying this, he was taken up into a cloud while they were watching, and they could no longer see him.G2532G2036G5023G846G991G1869G2532G3507G5274G846G575G846G3788 10As they strained to see him rising into heaven, two white-robed men suddenly stood among them.G2532G5613G2258G816G1519G3772G846G4198G2532G2400G1417G435G3936G846G1722G3022G2066 11"Men of Galilee," they said, "why are you standing here staring into heaven? Jesus has been taken from you into heaven, but someday he will return from heaven in the same way you saw him go!"G3739G2532G2036G435G1057G5101G2476G1689G1519G3772G3778G2424G3588G353G575G5216G1519G3772G2064G3779G2064G3739G5158G2300G846G4198G1519G3772

Matthias Replaces Judas

12Then the apostles returned to Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives, a distance of half a mile.G5119G5290G1519G2419G575G3735G2564G1638G3739G2076G1451G2419G4521G2192G3598 13When they arrived, they went to the upstairs room of the house where they were staying. Here are the names of those who were present: Peter, John, James, Andrew, Philip, Thomas, Bartholomew, Matthew, James (son of Alphaeus), Simon (the Zealot), and Judas (son of James).G2532G3753G1525G305G1519G5253G3757G2258G2650G5037G4074G2532G2385G2532G2491G2532G406G5376G2532G2381G918G2532G3156G2385G256G2532G4613G2208G2532G2455G2385 14They all met together and were constantly united in prayer, along with Mary the mother of Jesus, several other women, and the brothers of Jesus.G3778G3956G2258G4342G3661G4335G2532G1162G4862G1135G2532G3137G3384G2424G2532G4862G846G80 15During this time, when about 120 believers were together in one place, Peter stood up and addressed them.G2532G1722G5025G2250G4074G450G1722G3319G3101G2036G5037G3793G3686G1909G846G2258G5613G1540G1501 16"Brothers," he said, "the Scriptures had to be fulfilled concerning Judas, who guided those who arrested Jesus. This was predicted long ago by the Holy Spirit, speaking through King David.G435G80G5026G1124G1163G4137G3739G40G4151G1223G4750G1138G4277G4012G2455G3588G1096G3595G4815G2424 17Judas was one of us and shared in the ministry with us."G3754G2258G2674G4862G2254G2532G2975G2819G5026G1248 18(Judas had bought a field with the money he received for his treachery. Falling headfirst there, his body split open, spilling out all his intestines.G3303G3767G3778G2932G5564G1537G3408G93G2532G1096G4248G2997G3319G2532G3956G846G4698G1632 19The news of his death spread to all the people of Jerusalem, and they gave the place the Aramaic name Akeldama, which means "Field of Blood.")G2532G1096G1110G3956G2730G2419G5620G1565G5564G2564G846G2398G1258G184G5123G5564G129 20Peter continued, "This was written in the book of Psalms, where it says, 'Let his home become desolate, with no one living in it.' It also says, 'Let someone else take his position.'G1063G1125G1722G976G5568G1096G846G1886G1096G2048G2532G2077G3361G2730G1722G846G2532G846G1984G2983G2087G2983 21"So now we must choose a replacement for Judas from among the men who were with us the entire time we were traveling with the Lord Jesus—G3767G5130G435G4905G2254G3956G5550G1722G3739G2962G2424G1831G1525G2532G1831G1909G2248 22from the time he was baptized by John until the day he was taken from us. Whoever is chosen will join us as a witness of Jesus' resurrection."G756G575G908G2491G2193G2250G3739G353G575G2257G1163G1520G1096G3144G4862G2254G846G386 23So they nominated two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias.G2532G2476G1417G2501G2564G923G3739G1941G2459G2532G3159 24Then they all prayed, "O Lord, you know every heart. Show us which of these men you have chosenG2532G4336G2036G4771G2962G2589G3956G322G3739G1520G1537G5130G1417G1586 25as an apostle to replace Judas in this ministry, for he has deserted us and gone where he belongs."G2983G2819G5026G1248G2532G651G1537G3739G2455G3845G4198G1519G2398G5117 26Then they cast lots, and Matthias was selected to become an apostle with the other eleven.G2532G1325G846G2819G2532G2819G4098G1909G3159G2532G4785G3326G1733G652
