Jesus Sentenced to Death

19Then Pilate had Jesus flogged with a lead-tipped whip.G5119G4091G3767G2983G2424G2532G3146 2The soldiers wove a crown of thorns and put it on his head, and they put a purple robe on him.G2532G4757G4120G4735G1537G173G2007G846G2776G2532G4016G846G4210G2440 3"Hail! King of the Jews!" they mocked, as they slapped him across the face.G2532G3004G5463G935G2453G2532G1325G846G4475 4Pilate went outside again and said to the people, "I am going to bring him out to you now, but understand clearly that I find him not guilty."G4091G3767G1831G1854G3825G2532G3004G846G2396G71G846G1854G5213G2443G1097G3754G2147G3762G156G1722G846 5Then Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate said, "Look, here is the man!"G3767G1831G2424G1854G5409G4735G174G2532G4210G2440G2532G3004G846G2396G444 6When they saw him, the leading priests and Temple guards began shouting, "Crucify him! Crucify him!" "Take him yourselves and crucify him," Pilate said. "I find him not guilty."G3753G749G3767G2532G5257G1492G846G2905G3004G4717G4717G4091G3004G846G2983G5210G846G2532G4717G1063G1473G2147G3756G156G1722G846 7The Jewish leaders replied, "By our law he ought to die because he called himself the Son of God."G2453G611G846G2249G2192G3551G2532G2596G2257G3551G3784G599G3754G4160G1438G5207G2316 8When Pilate heard this, he was more frightened than ever.G3753G4091G3767G191G5126G3056G5399G3123G5399 9He took Jesus back into the headquarters again and asked him, "Where are you from?" But Jesus gave no answer.G2532G1525G3825G1519G4232G2532G3004G2424G4159G1488G4771G1161G2424G1325G846G3756G612 10"Why don't you talk to me?" Pilate demanded. "Don't you realize that I have the power to release you or crucify you?"G3767G3004G4091G846G2980G3756G1698G1492G3756G3754G2192G1849G4717G4571G2532G2192G1849G630G4571 11Then Jesus said, "You would have no power over me at all unless it were given to you from above. So the one who handed me over to you has the greater sin."G2424G611G2192G3756G1849G3762G2596G1700G1508G2258G1325G4671G509G5124G1223G3860G3165G4671G2192G3187G266 12Then Pilate tried to release him, but the Jewish leaders shouted, "If you release this man, you are no 'friend of Caesar.' Anyone who declares himself a king is a rebel against Caesar."G1537G5127G4091G2212G630G846G1161G2453G2896G3004G1437G630G5126G630G1488G3756G2541G5384G3956G4160G846G935G483G2541 13When they said this, Pilate brought Jesus out to them again. Then Pilate sat down on the judgment seat on the platform that is called the Stone Pavement.G4091G3767G191G5126G3056G71G2424G1854G2532G2523G1909G968G1519G5117G3004G3038G1161G1447G1042 14It was now about noon on the day of preparation for the Passover. And Pilate said to the people, "Look, here is your king!"G1161G2258G3904G3957G1161G5616G1623G5610G2532G3004G2453G2396G5216G935 15"Away with him," they yelled. "Away with him! Crucify him!" "What? Crucify your king?" Pilate asked. "We have no king but Caesar," the leading priests shouted back.G1161G2905G142G142G4717G846G4091G3004G846G4717G5216G935G749G611G2192G3756G935G1508G2541

The Crucifixion

16Then Pilate turned Jesus over to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus away.G5119G3860G846G3767G846G2443G4717G1161G3880G2424G2532G520 17Carrying the cross by himself, he went to the place called Place of the Skull.G2532G941G846G4716G1831G1519G5117G3004G2898G3739G3004G1447G1115 18There they nailed him to the cross. Two others were crucified with him, one on either side, with Jesus between them.G3699G4717G846G2532G1417G243G3326G846G2532G1782G1782G1161G2424G3319 19And Pilate posted a sign over him that read, "Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews."G1161G2532G4091G1125G5102G2532G5087G1909G4716G1161G1125G2258G2424G3480G935G2453 20The place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and the sign was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek, so that many people could read it.G5126G5102G3767G314G4183G2453G3754G5117G3699G2424G4717G2258G1451G4172G2532G2258G1125G1447G1676G4515 21Then the leading priests objected and said to Pilate, "Change it from 'The King of the Jews' to 'He said, I am King of the Jews.'"G3767G3004G749G2453G4091G1125G3361G935G2453G235G3754G1565G2036G1510G935G2453 22Pilate replied, "No, what I have written, I have written."G4091G611G3739G1125G1125 23When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they divided his clothes among the four of them. They also took his robe, but it was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.G3767G4757G3753G4717G2424G2983G846G2440G2532G4160G5064G3313G1538G4757G3313G2532G5509G1161G5509G2258G729G5307G1537G509G1223G3650 24So they said, "Rather than tearing it apart, let's throw dice for it." This fulfilled the Scripture that says, "They divided my garments among themselves and threw dice for my clothing." So that is what they did.G2036G3767G4314G240G4977G3361G4977G846G235G2975G4012G846G5101G2071G2443G1124G4137G3588G3004G1266G3450G2440G1438G2532G1909G3450G2441G906G2819G5023G3303G3767G4757G4160 25Standing near the cross were Jesus' mother, and his mother's sister, Mary (the wife of Clopas), and Mary Magdalene.G1161G2476G3844G4716G2424G846G3384G2532G846G3384G79G3137G3588G2832G2532G3137G3094 26When Jesus saw his mother standing there beside the disciple he loved, he said to her, "Dear woman, here is your son."G2424G3767G1492G3384G2532G3101G3936G3739G25G3004G846G3384G1135G2400G4675G5207 27And he said to this disciple, "Here is your mother." And from then on this disciple took her into his home.G1534G3004G3101G2400G4675G3384G2532G575G1565G5610G3101G2983G846G1519G2398

The Death of Jesus

28Jesus knew that his mission was now finished, and to fulfill Scripture he said, "I am thirsty."G3326G5124G2424G1492G3754G3956G5055G2235G5055G2443G1124G5048G3004G1372 29A jar of sour wine was sitting there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put it on a hyssop branch, and held it up to his lips.G3767G2749G4632G3324G3690G1161G4130G4699G3690G2532G4060G5301G4374G846G4750 30When Jesus had tasted it, he said, "It is finished!" Then he bowed his head and released his spirit.G3753G2424G3767G2983G3690G2036G5055G2532G2827G2776G3860G4151 31It was the day of preparation, and the Jewish leaders didn't want the bodies hanging there the next day, which was the Sabbath . So they asked Pilate to hasten their deaths by ordering that their legs be broken. Then their bodies could be taken down.G2453G3767G1893G2258G2258G3904G3363G4983G3306G3363G3306G1909G4716G1722G4521G1063G1565G4521G2258G3173G2250G2065G4091G2443G846G4628G2608G2532G142 32So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the two men crucified with Jesus.G3767G2064G4757G2532G2608G4628G3303G4413G2532G243G3588G4957G846 33But when they came to Jesus, they saw that he was already dead, so they didn't break his legs.G1161G5613G2064G1909G2424G1492G846G2348G2235G2608G3756G846G4628 34One of the soldiers, however, pierced his side with a spear, and immediately blood and water flowed out.G235G1520G4757G3057G3572G846G4125G2532G2117G1831G129G2532G5204 35(This report is from an eyewitness giving an accurate account. He speaks the truth so that you also can believe.)G2532G3708G3140G2532G846G3141G2076G228G2548G1492G3754G3004G227G2443G5210G4100 36These things happened in fulfillment of the Scriptures that say, "Not one of his bones will be broken,"G1063G5023G1096G2443G1124G4137G3747G846G4937G3756G4937 37and "They will look on the one they pierced."G2532G3825G2087G1124G3004G3700G1519G3739G1574

The Burial of Jesus

38Afterward Joseph of Arimathea, who had been a secret disciple of Jesus (because he feared the Jewish leaders), asked Pilate for permission to take down Jesus' body. When Pilate gave permission, Joseph came and took the body away.G1161G3326G5023G2501G575G707G5607G3101G2424G1161G2928G1223G5401G2453G2065G4091G2443G142G4983G2424G2532G4091G2010G2064G3767G2532G142G4983G2424 39With him came Nicodemus, the man who had come to Jesus at night. He brought seventy-five pounds of perfumed ointment made from myrrh and aloes.G1161G2064G2532G3530G3588G4412G2064G4314G2424G3571G5342G3395G4666G2532G250G5616G1540G3046 40Following Jewish burial custom, they wrapped Jesus' body with the spices in long sheets of linen cloth.G3767G2983G4983G2424G2532G1210G846G3608G3326G759G2531G1485G2453G2076G1779 41The place of crucifixion was near a garden, where there was a new tomb, never used before.G1161G1722G5117G3699G4717G2258G2779G2532G1722G2779G2537G3419G1722G3739G5087G3764G3762G3764G5087 42And so, because it was the day of preparation for the Jewish Passover and since the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there.G1563G5087G2424G3767G1223G2453G3904G3754G3419G2258G1451
