Jacob’s Return to Bethel

35Then God said to Jacob, "Get ready and move to Bethel and settle there. Build an altar there to the God who appeared to you when you fled from your brother, Esau."H430H559H3290H6965H5927H1008H3427H6213H4196H410H7200H1272H6440H6215H251 2So Jacob told everyone in his household, "Get rid of all your pagan idols, purify yourselves, and put on clean clothing.H3290H559H1004H5493H5236H430H8432H2891H2498H8071 3We are now going to Bethel, where I will build an altar to the God who answered my prayers when I was in distress. He has been with me wherever I have gone."H6965H5927H1008H6213H4196H410H6030H3117H6869H1870H1980 4So they gave Jacob all their pagan idols and earrings, and he buried them under the great tree near Shechem.H5414H3290H5236H430H3027H5141H241H3290H2934H424H7927 5As they set out, a terror from God spread over the people in all the towns of that area, so no one attacked Jacob's family.H5265H2847H430H5892H5439H7291H310H1121H3290 6Eventually, Jacob and his household arrived at Luz (also called Bethel) in Canaan.H3290H935H3870H776H3667H1008H5971 7Jacob built an altar there and named the place El-bethel (which means "God of Bethel"), because God had appeared to him there when he was fleeing from his brother, Esau.H1129H4196H7121H4725H416H430H1540H1272H6440H251 8Soon after this, Rebekah's old nurse, Deborah, died. She was buried beneath the oak tree in the valley below Bethel. Ever since, the tree has been called Allon-bacuth (which means "oak of weeping").H1683H7259H3243H4191H6912H1008H437H8034H7121H439 9Now that Jacob had returned from Paddan-aram, God appeared to him again at Bethel. God blessed him,H430H7200H3290H935H6307H1288 10saying, "Your name is Jacob, but you will not be called Jacob any longer. From now on your name will be Israel." So God renamed him Israel.H430H559H8034H3290H8034H7121H3290H3478H8034H7121H8034H3478 11Then God said, "I am El-Shaddai—'God Almighty.' Be fruitful and multiply. You will become a great nation, even many nations. Kings will be among your descendants!H430H559H410H7706H6509H7235H1471H6951H1471H4428H3318H2504 12And I will give you the land I once gave to Abraham and Isaac. Yes, I will give it to you and your descendants after you."H776H5414H85H3327H5414H2233H310H5414H776 13Then God went up from the place where he had spoken to Jacob.H430H5927H4725H1696 14Jacob set up a stone pillar to mark the place where God had spoken to him. Then he poured wine over it as an offering to God and anointed the pillar with olive oil.H3290H5324H4676H4725H1696H4678H68H5258H5262H3332H8081 15And Jacob named the place Bethel (which means "house of God"), because God had spoken to him there.H3290H7121H8034H4725H430H1696H1008

The Deaths of Rachel and Isaac

16Leaving Bethel, Jacob and his clan moved on toward Ephrath. But Rachel went into labor while they were still some distance away. Her labor pains were intense.H5265H1008H5750H3530H776H935H672H7354H3205H7185H3205 17After a very hard delivery, the midwife finally exclaimed, "Don't be afraid—you have another son!"H7185H3205H3205H559H3372H1121 18Rachel was about to die, but with her last breath she named the baby Ben-oni (which means "son of my sorrow"). The baby's father, however, called him Benjamin (which means "son of my right hand").H5315H3318H4191H7121H8034H1126H1H7121H1144 19So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem).H7354H4191H6912H1870H672H1035 20Jacob set up a stone monument over Rachel's grave, and it can be seen there to this day.H3290H5324H4676H6900H4678H7354H6900H3117 21Then Jacob traveled on and camped beyond Migdal-eder.H3478H5265H5186H168H1973H4026H4029 22While he was living there, Reuben had intercourse with Bilhah, his father's concubine, and Jacob soon heard about it. These are the names of the twelve sons of Jacob.H3478H7931H776H7205H3212H7901H1090H1H6370H3478H8085H1121H3290H8147H6240 23The sons of Leah were Reuben (Jacob's oldest son), Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun.H1121H3812H7205H3290H1060H8095H3878H3063H3485H2074 24The sons of Rachel were Joseph and Benjamin.H1121H7354H3130H1144 25The sons of Bilhah, Rachel's servant, were Dan and Naphtali.H1121H1090H7354H8198H1835H5321 26The sons of Zilpah, Leah's servant, were Gad and Asher. These are the names of the sons who were born to Jacob at Paddan-aram.H1121H2153H3812H8198H1410H836H1121H3290H3205H6307 27So Jacob returned to his father, Isaac, in Mamre, which is near Kiriath-arba (now called Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac had both lived as foreigners.H3290H935H3327H1H4471H7153H2275H85H3327H1481 28Isaac lived for 180 years.H3117H3327H3967H8141H8084H8141 29Then he breathed his last and died at a ripe old age, joining his ancestors in death. And his sons, Esau and Jacob, buried him.H3327H1478H4191H622H5971H2205H7649H3117H1121H6215H3290H6912
