Jesus Teaches about Inner Purity

15Some Pharisees and teachers of religious law now arrived from Jerusalem to see Jesus. They asked him,G5119G4334G2424G1122G2532G5330G575G2414G3004 2"Why do your disciples disobey our age-old tradition? For they ignore our tradition of ceremonial hand washing before they eat."G1302G4675G3101G3845G3862G4245G1063G3538G3756G846G5495G3752G2068G740 3Jesus replied, "And why do you, by your traditions, violate the direct commandments of God?G1161G611G2036G846G1302G5210G2532G3845G1785G2316G1223G5216G3862 4For instance, God says, 'Honor your father and mother,'c and 'Anyone who speaks disrespectfully of father or mother must be put to death.'G1063G2316G1781G3004G5091G4675G3962G2532G3384G2532G2551G3962G2228G3384G5053G2288 5But you say it is all right for people to say to their parents, 'Sorry, I can't help you. For I have vowed to give to God what I would have given to you.'G1161G5210G3004G3739G302G2036G3962G2228G3384G1435G1537G3739G1437G5623G1700 6In this way, you say they don't need to honor their parentsc. And so you cancel the word of God for the sake of your own tradition.G2532G5091G3364G846G3962G2228G846G3384G2532G208G1785G2316G208G1223G5216G3862 7You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you, for he wrote,G5273G2573G4395G2268G4395G4012G5216G3004 8'These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.G3778G2992G1448G3427G846G4750G2532G5091G3165G5491G1161G846G2588G568G4206G575G1700 9Their worship is a farce, for they teach man-made ideas as commands from God.'c"G1161G3155G4576G3165G1321G1319G1778G444 10Then Jesus called to the crowd to come and hear. "Listen," he said, "and try to understand.G2532G4341G3793G2036G846G191G2532G4920 11It's not what goes into your mouth that defiles you; you are defiled by the words that come out of your mouth."G3756G1525G1519G4750G2840G444G235G1607G1537G4750G5124G2840G444 12Then the disciples came to him and asked, "Do you realize you offended the Pharisees by what you just said?"G5119G4334G846G3101G2036G846G1492G3754G5330G4624G191G3056 13Jesus replied, "Every plant not planted by my heavenly Father will be uprooted,G1161G611G2036G3956G5451G3739G3450G3770G3962G5452G3756G5452G1610 14so ignore them. They are blind guides leading the blind, and if one blind person guides another, they will both fall into a ditch."G863G846G863G1526G5185G3595G5185G1161G1437G5185G3594G5185G297G4098G1519G999 15Then Peter said to Jesus, "Explain to us the parable that says people aren't defiled by what they eat."G1161G611G4074G2036G846G5419G2254G5026G3850 16"Don't you understand yet?" Jesus asked.G1161G2424G2036G2075G5210G2532G188G801 17"Anything you eat passes through the stomach and then goes into the sewer.G3539G3768G3539G3768G3539G3754G3956G1531G1519G4750G5562G1519G2836G2532G1544G1519G856 18But the words you speak come from the heart—that's what defiles you.G1161G3588G1607G1537G4750G1831G1537G2588G2548G2840G444 19For from the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, all sexual immorality, theft, lying, and slander.G1063G1537G2588G1831G4190G1261G5408G3430G4202G2829G5577G988 20These are what defile you. Eating with unwashed hands will never defile you."G5023G2076G3588G2840G444G1161G5315G449G5495G2840G3756G444

The Faith of a Gentile Woman

21Then Jesus left Galilee and went north to the region of Tyre and Sidon.G2532G2424G1831G1564G402G1519G3313G5184G2532G4605 22A Gentilec woman who lived there came to him, pleading, "Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David! For my daughter is possessed by a demon that torments her severely."G2532G2400G1135G5478G1831G575G1565G3725G2905G846G3004G1653G3165G2962G5207G1138G3450G2364G2560G1139 23But Jesus gave her no reply, not even a word. Then his disciples urged him to send her away. "Tell her to go away," they said. "She is bothering us with all her begging."G1161G611G846G3756G3056G2532G846G3101G4334G2065G846G3004G630G846G630G3754G2896G3693G2257 24Then Jesus said to the woman, "I was sent only to help God's lost sheep—the people of Israel."G1161G611G2036G649G3756G649G1508G1519G622G4263G3624G2474 25But she came and worshiped him, pleading again, "Lord, help me!"G1161G2064G4352G846G3004G2962G997G3427 26Jesus responded, "It isn't right to take food from the children and throw it to the dogs."G1161G611G2036G2076G3756G2570G2983G5043G740G2532G906G2952 27She replied, "That's true, Lord, but even dogs are allowed to eat the scraps that fall beneath their masters' table."G1161G2036G3483G2962G2532G1063G2952G2068G575G5589G3588G4098G575G846G2962G5132 28"Dear woman," Jesus said to her, "your faith is great. Your request is granted." And her daughter was instantly healed.G5119G2424G611G2036G846G5599G1135G3173G4675G4102G1096G4671G5613G2309G2532G846G2364G2390G575G1565G5610

Jesus Heals Many People

29Jesus returned to the Sea of Galilee and climbed a hill and sat down.G2532G2424G3327G1564G2064G3844G2281G1056G2532G305G1519G3735G2521G1563 30A vast crowd brought to him people who were lame, blind, crippled, those who couldn't speak, and many others. They laid them before Jesus, and he healed them all.G2532G4183G3793G4334G846G2192G3326G1438G5560G5185G2974G2948G2532G4183G2087G2532G4496G846G4496G3844G2424G4228G2532G2323G846 31The crowd was amazed! Those who hadn't been able to speak were talking, the crippled were made well, the lame were walking, and the blind could see again! And they praised the God of Israel.G5620G3793G2296G991G2974G2980G2948G5199G5560G4043G2532G5185G991G2532G1392G2316G2474

Jesus Feeds Four Thousand

32Then Jesus called his disciples and told them, "I feel sorry for these people. They have been here with me for three days, and they have nothing left to eat. I don't want to send them away hungry, or they will faint along the way."G1161G2424G4341G846G3101G2036G4697G1909G3793G3754G4357G3427G2235G5140G2250G2532G2192G3756G5101G5315G2532G2309G3756G630G846G630G3523G3379G1590G1722G3598 33The disciples replied, "Where would we get enough food here in the wilderness for such a huge crowd?"G2532G846G3101G3004G846G4159G2254G5118G740G1722G2047G5620G5526G5118G3793 34Jesus asked, "How much bread do you have?" They replied, "Seven loaves, and a few small fish."G2532G2424G3004G846G4214G740G2192G1161G2036G2033G2532G3641G2485 35So Jesus told all the people to sit down on the ground.G2532G2753G3793G377G1909G1093 36Then he took the seven loaves and the fish, thanked God for them, and broke them into pieces. He gave them to the disciples, who distributed the food to the crowd.G2532G2983G2033G740G2532G2486G2168G2806G2532G1325G846G3101G1161G3101G3793 37They all ate as much as they wanted. Afterward, the disciples picked up seven large baskets of leftover food.G2532G5315G3956G5315G2532G5526G2532G142G2801G4052G2033G4711G4134 38There were 4,000 men who were fed that day, in addition to all the women and children.G1161G2068G2258G5070G435G5565G1135G2532G3813 39Then Jesus sent the people home, and he got into a boat and crossed over to the region of Magadan.G2532G630G3793G1684G1519G4143G2532G2064G1519G3725G3093

Leaders Demand a Miraculous Sign

16One day the Pharisees and Sadducees came to test Jesus, demanding that he show them a miraculous sign from heaven to prove his authority.G5330G2532G4523G4334G2532G3985G1905G846G1925G846G4592G1537G3772 2He replied, "You know the saying, 'Red sky at night means fair weather tomorrow;G1161G611G2036G846G1096G3798G3004G2105G1063G3772G4449 3red sky in the morning means foul weather all day.' You know how to interpret the weather signs in the sky, but you don't know how to interpret the signs of the times!cG2532G4404G5494G4594G1063G3772G4449G4768G5273G1097G1252G3303G4383G3772G1161G1410G3756G4592G2540 4Only an evil, adulterous generation would demand a miraculous sign, but the only sign I will give them is the sign of the prophet Jonahc." Then Jesus left them and went away.G4190G2532G3428G1074G1934G4592G2532G3756G4592G1325G846G1508G4592G4396G2495G2532G2641G846G565

Yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees

5Later, after they crossed to the other side of the lake, the disciples discovered they had forgotten to bring any bread.G2532G846G3101G2064G1519G4008G1950G2983G740 6"Watch out!" Jesus warned them. "Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees."G1161G2424G2036G846G3708G2532G4337G575G2219G5330G2532G4523 7At this they began to argue with each other because they hadn't brought any bread.G1161G1260G1722G1438G3004G3754G2983G3756G740 8Jesus knew what they were saying, so he said, "You have so little faith! Why are you arguing with each other about having no bread?G1161G2424G1097G2036G846G3640G5101G1260G1722G1438G3754G2983G3756G740 9Don't you understand even yet? Don't you remember the 5,000 I fed with five loaves, and the baskets of leftovers you picked up?G3539G3768G3539G3761G3421G4002G740G4000G2532G4214G2894G2983 10Or the 4,000 I fed with seven loaves, and the large baskets of leftovers you picked up?G3761G2033G740G5070G2532G4214G4711G2983 11Why can't you understand that I'm not talking about bread? So again I say, 'Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.'"G4459G3754G3539G3756G3539G2036G3756G5213G4012G740G4337G575G2219G5330G2532G4523 12Then at last they understood that he wasn't speaking about the yeast in bread, but about the deceptive teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.G5119G4920G3754G2036G3756G4337G575G2219G740G235G575G1322G5330G2532G4523

Peter’s Declaration about Jesus

13When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, "Who do people say that the Son of Man is?"cG1161G2424G2064G1519G3313G2542G5376G2065G846G3101G3004G5101G444G3004G3165G5207G444G1511 14"Well," they replied, "some say John the Baptist, some say Elijah, and others say Jeremiah or one of the other prophets."G1161G2036G3303G2491G910G1161G243G2243G1161G2087G2408G2228G1520G4396 15Then he asked them, "But who do you say I am?"G3004G846G1161G5101G3004G5210G3165G1511 16Simon Peter answered, "You are the Messiahc, the Son of the living God."G1161G4613G4074G611G2036G4771G1488G5547G5207G2198G2316 17Jesus replied, "You are blessed, Simon son of Johnc, because my Father in heaven has revealed this to you. You did not learn this from any human being.G2532G2424G611G2036G846G3107G1488G4613G920G3754G4561G2532G129G601G3756G601G4671G235G3450G3962G3588G1722G3772 18Now I say to you that you are Peter (which means 'rock')c, and upon this rock I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it.G1161G3004G2504G4671G3754G4771G1488G4074G2532G1909G5026G4073G3618G3450G1577G2532G4439G86G2729G3756G2729G846 19And I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven. Whatever you forbidc on earth will be forbidden in heaven, and whatever you permit on earth will be permitted in heaven."G2532G1325G4671G2807G932G3772G2532G3739G1437G1210G1909G1093G2071G1210G1722G3772G2532G3739G1437G3089G1909G1093G2071G3089G1722G3772 20Then he sternly warned the disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah.G5119G1291G846G3101G2443G2036G3367G3754G846G2076G2424G5547

Jesus Predicts His Death

21From then on Jesusc began to tell his disciples plainly that it was necessary for him to go to Jerusalem, and that he would suffer many terrible things at the hands of the elders, the leading priests, and the teachers of religious law. He would be killed, but on the third day he would be raised from the dead.G575G5119G756G2424G1166G846G3101G3754G846G1163G565G1519G2414G2532G3958G4183G575G4245G2532G749G2532G1122G2532G615G2532G1453G5154G2250 22But Peter took him aside and began to reprimand himc for saying such things. "Heaven forbid, Lord," he said. "This will never happen to you!"G2532G4074G4355G846G756G2008G846G3004G2436G4671G2962G5124G2071G3364G2071G4671 23Jesus turned to Peter and said, "Get away from me, Satan! You are a dangerous trap to me. You are seeing things merely from a human point of view, not from God's."G1161G4762G2036G4074G5217G3694G3450G4567G1488G3754G4625G3450G5426G3756G3588G2316G235G444 24Then Jesus said to his disciples, "If any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross, and follow me.G5119G2036G2424G846G3101G1536G2309G2064G3694G3450G533G1438G2532G142G846G4716G2532G190G3427 25If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it.G1063G3739G302G2309G4982G846G5590G622G846G1161G3739G302G622G846G5590G1752G1700G1752G2147G846 26And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul?c Is anything worth more than your soul?G1063G5101G444G5623G1437G2770G3650G2889G1161G2210G846G5590G2228G5101G444G1325G465G846G5590 27For the Son of Man will come with his angels in the glory of his Father and will judge all people according to their deeds.G1063G5207G444G3195G2064G1722G1391G846G3962G3326G846G32G2532G5119G591G1538G2596G846G4234 28And I tell you the truth, some standing here right now will not die before they see the Son of Man coming in his Kingdom."G281G3004G5213G1526G5100G2476G5602G3748G1089G3364G1089G2288G302G2193G1492G5207G444G2064G1722G846G932
