The Raising of Lazarus

11A man named Lazarus was sick. He lived in Bethany with his sisters, Mary and Martha.G1161G5100G2258G770G2976G575G963G1537G2968G3137G2532G846G79G3136
2This is the Mary who later poured the expensive perfume on the Lord's feet and wiped them with her hairc. Her brother, Lazarus, was sick.G1161G2258G3137G3588G218G2962G3464G2532G1591G846G4228G846G2359G3739G80G2976G770
3So the two sisters sent a message to Jesus telling him, "Lord, your dear friend is very sick."G3767G79G649G4314G846G3004G2962G2396G3739G5368G770
4But when Jesus heard about it he said, "Lazarus's sickness will not end in death. No, it happened for the glory of God so that the Son of God will receive glory from this."G1161G2424G191G2036G3778G769G2076G3756G4314G2288G235G5228G1391G2316G2443G5207G2316G1392G1223G846
5So although Jesus loved Martha, Mary, and Lazarus,G1161G2424G25G3136G2532G846G79G2532G2976
6he stayed where he was for the next two days.G5613G191G3767G3754G770G3306G1417G2250G5119G3303G1722G5117G3739G2258
7Finally, he said to his disciples, "Let's go back to Judea."G1899G3326G5124G3004G3101G71G1519G2449G3825
8But his disciples objected. "Rabbi," they said, "only a few days ago the peoplec in Judea were trying to stone you. Are you going there again?"G3101G3004G846G4461G2453G3568G2212G3034G4571G2532G5217G1563G3825
9Jesus replied, "There are twelve hours of daylight every day. During the day people can walk safely. They can see because they have the light of this world.G2424G611G1526G3780G1427G5610G2250G1437G5100G4043G1722G2250G4350G3756G3754G991G5457G5127G2889
10But at night there is danger of stumbling because they have no light."G1161G1437G5100G4043G1722G3571G4350G3754G2076G3756G5457G1722G846
11Then he said, "Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but now I will go and wake him up."G5023G2036G846G2532G3326G5124G3004G846G2257G5384G2976G2837G235G4198G2443G1852G846G1852
12The disciples said, "Lord, if he is sleeping, he will soon get better!"G3767G2036G846G3101G2962G1487G2837G4982
13They thought Jesus meant Lazarus was simply sleeping, but Jesus meant Lazarus had died.G1161G2424G2046G4012G846G2288G1161G1565G1380G3754G3004G4012G2838G5258
14So he told them plainly, "Lazarus is dead.G5119G3767G2036G2424G846G3954G2976G599
15And for your sakes, I'm glad I wasn't there, for now you will really believe. Come, let's go see him."G2532G5463G1223G5209G3754G2252G2258G3756G1563G2443G4100G235G71G4314G846
16Thomas, nicknamed the Twinc, said to his fellow disciples, "Let's go, too—and die with Jesus."G3767G2036G2381G3588G3004G1324G4827G71G2532G71G2443G2249G599G3326G846
17When Jesus arrived at Bethany, he was told that Lazarus had already been in his grave for four days.G3767G2424G2064G2147G846G2192G1722G3419G5064G2250G2235
18Bethany was only a few milesc down the road from Jerusalem,G1161G963G2258G1451G2414G5613G1178G4712G575
19and many of the people had come to console Martha and Mary in their loss.G2532G4183G1537G2453G2064G4314G3136G2532G3137G4012G2443G3888G846G4012G846G80
20When Martha got word that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him. But Mary stayed in the house.G3767G3136G5613G191G3754G2424G2064G5221G846G1161G3137G2516G1722G3624
21Martha said to Jesus, "Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died.G3767G2036G3136G4314G2424G2962G1487G2258G5602G3450G80G302G2348G3756G2348
22But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask."G235G1492G2532G3568G3754G3745G302G154G2316G2316G1325G4671
23Jesus told her, "Your brother will rise again."G2424G3004G846G4675G80G450
24"Yes," Martha said, "he will rise when everyone else rises, at the last day."G3136G3004G846G1492G3754G450G1722G386G1722G2078G2250
25Jesus told her, "I am the resurrection and the lifec. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying.G2424G2036G846G1473G1510G386G2532G2222G4100G1519G1691G2579G599G2198
26Everyone who lives in me and believes in me will never ever die. Do you believe this, Martha?"G2532G3956G2198G2532G4100G1519G1691G599G3364G1519G165G599G4100G5124
27"Yes, Lord," she told him. "I have always believed you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who has come into the world from God."G3004G846G3483G2962G1473G4100G3754G4771G1488G5547G5207G2316G3588G2064G1519G2889
28Then she returned to Mary. She called Mary aside from the mourners and told her, "The Teacher is here and wants to see you."G2532G2036G5023G2036G565G2532G5455G3137G846G79G2977G2036G1320G3918G2532G5455G4571
29So Mary immediately went to him.G5613G1565G191G1453G5035G2532G2064G4314G846
30Jesus had stayed outside the village, at the place where Martha met him.G1161G2424G2064G3768G2064G1519G2968G235G2258G1722G5117G3699G3136G5221G846
31When the people who were at the house consoling Mary saw her leave so hastily, they assumed she was going to Lazarus's grave to weep. So they followed her there.G2453G3767G3588G5607G3326G846G1722G3614G2532G3888G846G1492G3137G3754G450G5030G2532G1831G190G846G3004G3754G5217G1519G3419G2443G2799G1563
32When Mary arrived and saw Jesus, she fell at his feet and said, "Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died."G3767G5613G3137G2064G3699G2424G2258G1492G846G4098G1519G846G4228G3004G846G2962G1487G2258G5602G3450G80G302G3756G599
33When Jesus saw her weeping and saw the other people wailing with her, a deep anger welled up within himc, and he was deeply troubled.G5613G2424G3767G1492G846G2799G2532G2453G2799G4905G846G1690G4151G2532G5015G1438
34"Where have you put him?" he asked them. They told him, "Lord, come and see."G2532G2036G4226G5087G846G3004G846G2962G2064G2532G1492
35Then Jesus wept.G2424G1145
36The people who were standing nearby said, "See how much he loved him!"G3767G3004G2453G2396G4459G5368G846
37But some said, "This man healed a blind man. Couldn't he have kept Lazarus from dying?"G1161G5100G1537G846G2036G1410G3756G3778G3588G455G3788G5185G4160G2443G2532G3778G599G3361G599
38Jesus was still angry as he arrived at the tomb, a cave with a stone rolled across its entrance.G2424G3767G3825G1690G1722G1438G2064G1519G3419G1161G2258G4693G2532G3037G1945G1909G846
39"Roll the stone aside," Jesus told them. But Martha, the dead man's sister, protested, "Lord, he has been dead for four days. The smell will be terrible."G2424G3004G142G3037G3136G79G2348G3004G846G2962G2235G3605G1063G2076G5066
40Jesus responded, "Didn't I tell you that you would see God's glory if you believe?"G2424G3004G846G2036G3756G4671G3754G1437G4100G3700G1391G2316
41So they rolled the stone aside. Then Jesus looked up to heaven and said, "Father, thank you for hearing me.G3767G142G3037G3757G2348G2258G2749G1161G2424G142G507G3788G2532G2036G3962G2168G4671G3754G191G3450
42You always hear me, but I said it out loud for the sake of all these people standing here, so that they will believe you sent me."G1161G1473G1492G3754G191G3450G3842G235G1223G3793G3588G4026G2036G2443G4100G3754G4771G649G3165
43Then Jesus shouted, "Lazarus, come out!"G2532G5023G2036G2905G3173G5456G2976G1204G1854
44And the dead man came out, his hands and feet bound in graveclothes, his face wrapped in a headcloth. Jesus told them, "Unwrap him and let him go!"G2532G2348G1831G1210G5495G2532G4228G2750G2532G846G3799G4019G4676G2424G3004G846G3089G846G2532G863G5217

The Plot to Kill Jesus

45Many of the people who were with Mary believed in Jesus when they saw this happen.G3767G4183G1537G2453G3588G2064G4314G3137G2532G2300G3739G2424G4160G4100G1519G846
46But some went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.G1161G5100G1537G846G565G4314G5330G2532G2036G846G3739G2424G4160
47Then the leading priests and Pharisees called the high councilc together. "What are we going to do?" they asked each other. "This man certainly performs many miraculous signs.G3767G4863G749G2532G5330G4892G2532G3004G5101G4160G3754G3778G444G4160G4183G4592
48If we allow him to go on like this, soon everyone will believe in him. Then the Roman army will come and destroy both our Templec and our nation."G1437G863G846G3779G863G3956G4100G1519G846G2532G4514G2064G2532G142G2532G2257G5117G2532G1484
49Caiaphas, who was high priest at that timec, said, "You don't know what you're talking about!G1161G1520G5100G1537G846G2533G5607G749G1565G1763G2036G846G5210G1492G3756G3762
50You don't realize that it's better for you that one man should die for the people than for the whole nation to be destroyed."G3761G1260G3754G4851G2254G2443G1520G444G599G5228G2992G2532G3650G1484G622G3361
51He did not say this on his own; as high priest at that time he was led to prophesy that Jesus would die for the entire nation.G1161G5124G2036G3756G575G1438G235G5607G749G1565G1763G4395G3754G2424G3195G599G5228G1484
52And not only for that nation, but to bring together and unite all the children of God scattered around the world.G2532G3756G5228G1484G3440G235G2443G2532G4863G1519G1520G5043G2316G1287
53So from that time on, the Jewish leaders began to plot Jesus' death.G3767G575G1565G2250G4823G2443G615G846G615
54As a result, Jesus stopped his public ministry among the people and left Jerusalem. He went to a place near the wilderness, to the village of Ephraim, and stayed there with his disciples.G2424G3767G4043G3765G3954G1722G2453G235G565G1564G1519G5561G1451G2048G1519G4172G3004G2187G2546G1304G3326G846G3101
55It was now almost time for the Jewish Passover celebration, and many people from all over the country arrived in Jerusalem several days early so they could go through the purification ceremony before Passover began.G1161G2453G3957G2258G1451G2532G4183G305G1537G5561G1519G2414G4253G3957G2443G48G1438
56They kept looking for Jesus, but as they stood around in the Temple, they said to each other, "What do you think? He won't come for Passover, will he?"G3767G2212G2424G2532G3004G3326G240G2476G1722G2411G5101G1380G5213G3754G2064G3364G2064G1519G1859
57Meanwhile, the leading priests and Pharisees had publicly ordered that anyone seeing Jesus must report it immediately so they could arrest him.G1161G2532G749G2532G5330G1325G1785G2443G1437G5100G1097G4226G2076G3377G3704G4084G846

Jesus Anointed at Bethany

12Six days before the Passover celebration began, Jesus arrived in Bethany, the home of Lazarus—the man he had raised from the dead.G3767G2424G1803G2250G4253G3957G2064G1519G963G3699G2976G2258G3588G2348G3739G1453G1537G3498
2A dinner was prepared in Jesus' honor. Martha served, and Lazarus was among those who atec with him.G1563G3767G4160G846G1173G2532G3136G1247G1161G2976G2258G1520G4873G846
3Then Mary took a twelve-ounce jarc of expensive perfume made from essence of nard, and she anointed Jesus' feet with it, wiping his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance.G3767G2983G3137G3046G3464G3487G4101G4186G218G4228G2424G2532G1591G846G4228G846G2359G1161G3614G4137G1537G3744G3464
4But Judas Iscariot, the disciple who would soon betray him, said,G3767G3004G1520G1537G846G3101G2455G2469G4613G3588G3195G3860G846
5"That perfume was worth a year's wagesc. It should have been sold and the money given to the poor."G1302G4097G3756G5124G3464G4097G5145G1220G2532G1325G4434
6Not that he cared for the poor—he was a thief, and since he was in charge of the disciples' money, he often stole some for himself.G1161G5124G2036G3756G3754G846G3199G4012G4434G235G3754G2258G2812G2532G2192G1101G2532G941G906
7Jesus replied, "Leave her alone. She did this in preparation for my burial.G3767G2036G2424G863G846G863G1519G2250G3450G1780G5083G846
8You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me."G1063G4434G3842G2192G3326G1438G1161G1691G2192G3756G3842
9When all the peoplec heard of Jesus' arrival, they flocked to see him and also to see Lazarus, the man Jesus had raised from the dead.G4183G3793G1537G2453G3767G1097G3754G2076G1563G2532G2064G3756G1223G2424G3440G235G2443G1492G2976G2532G3739G1453G1537G3498
10Then the leading priests decided to kill Lazarus, too,G1161G749G1011G2443G615G2976G2532G615
11for it was because of him that many of the people had deserted themc and believed in Jesus.G3754G1223G846G4183G2453G5217G2532G4100G1519G2424

Jesus’ Triumphant Entry

12The next day, the news that Jesus was on the way to Jerusalem swept through the city. A large crowd of Passover visitorsG1887G4183G3793G2064G1519G1859G191G3754G2424G2064G1519G2414
13took palm branches and went down the road to meet him. They shouted, "Praise God!c Blessings on the one who comes in the name of the LORD! Hail to the King of Israel!"G2983G902G5404G2532G1831G1519G5222G846G2532G2896G5614G2127G935G2474G2064G1722G3686G2962
14Jesus found a young donkey and rode on it, fulfilling the prophecy that said.G1161G2424G2147G3678G2523G1909G846G2531G2076G1125
15"Don't be afraid, people of Jerusalemc. Look, your King is coming, riding on a donkey's colt."G5399G3361G2364G4622G2400G4675G935G2064G2521G1909G3688G4454
16His disciples didn't understand at the time that this was a fulfillment of prophecy. But after Jesus entered into his glory, they remembered what had happened and realized that these things had been written about him.G1161G5023G1097G3756G846G3101G4412G235G3753G2424G1392G5119G3415G3754G5023G2258G1125G1909G846G2532G4160G5023G846
17Many in the crowd had seen Jesus call Lazarus from the tomb, raising him from the dead, and they were telling othersc about it.G3793G3767G5607G3326G846G3753G5455G2976G1537G3419G2532G1453G846G1537G3498G3140
18That was the reason so many went out to meet him—because they had heard about this miraculous sign.G5124G1223G3793G2532G5221G846G3754G191G846G4160G5124G4592
19Then the Pharisees said to each other, "There's nothing we can do. Look, everyonec has gone after him!"G5330G3767G2036G4314G1438G2334G3754G5623G3756G3762G2396G2889G565G3694G846

Jesus Predicts His Death

20Some Greeks who had come to Jerusalem for the Passover celebrationG1161G2258G5100G1672G1537G305G2443G4352G1722G1859
21paid a visit to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee. They said, "Sir, we want to meet Jesus."G3778G4334G3767G5376G575G966G1056G2532G2065G846G3004G2962G2309G1492G2424
22Philip told Andrew about it, and they went together to ask Jesus.G5376G2064G2532G3004G406G2532G3825G406G2532G5376G3004G2424
23Jesus replied, "Now the time has come for the Son of Manc to enter into his glory.G1161G2424G611G846G3004G5610G2064G2443G5207G444G1392
24I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat is planted in the soil and dies, it remains alone. But its death will produce many new kernels—a plentiful harvest of new lives.G281G281G3004G5213G3362G2848G4621G4098G1519G1093G599G846G3306G3441G1161G1437G599G5342G4183G2590
25Those who love their life in this world will lose it. Those who care nothing for their life in this world will keep it for eternity.G5368G846G5590G622G846G2532G3404G846G5590G1722G5129G2889G5442G846G1519G2222G166
26Anyone who wants to be my disciple must follow me, because my servants must be where I am. And the Father will honor anyone who serves me.G1437G5100G1247G1698G190G1698G2532G3699G1473G1510G1563G2071G2532G1699G1249G2071G2532G1437G5100G1247G1698G846G5091G3962G5091
27"Now my soul is deeply troubled. Should I pray, 'Father, save me from this hour'? But this is the very reason I came!G3568G5015G3450G5590G5015G2532G5101G2036G3962G4982G3165G1537G5026G5610G235G5124G1223G2064G1519G5026G5610
28Father, bring glory to your name." Then a voice spoke from heaven, saying, "I have already brought glory to my name, and I will do so again."G3962G1392G4675G3686G3767G2064G5456G1537G3772G1392G2532G1392G2532G1392G3825
29When the crowd heard the voice, some thought it was thunder, while others declared an angel had spoken to him.G3793G3767G2476G2532G191G3004G1096G1027G243G3004G32G2980G846
30Then Jesus told them, "The voice was for your benefit, not mine.G2424G611G2532G2036G3778G5456G1096G3756G1223G1691G235G1223G5209G1223
31The time for judging this world has come, when Satan, the ruler of this world, will be cast out.G3568G2076G2920G5127G2889G3568G1544G758G5127G2889G1544G1854
32And when I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw everyone to myself."G2504G1437G5312G1537G1093G1670G3956G4314G1683
33He said this to indicate how he was going to die.G1161G5124G3004G4591G4169G2288G3195G599
34The crowd responded, "We understood from Scripturec that the Messiah would live forever. How can you say the Son of Man will die? Just who is this Son of Man, anyway?"G3793G611G846G2249G191G1537G3551G3754G5547G3306G1519G165G2532G4459G3004G4771G3754G5207G444G1163G5312G5101G2076G3778G5207G444
35Jesus replied, "My light will shine for you just a little longer. Walk in the light while you can, so the darkness will not overtake you. Those who walk in the darkness cannot see where they are going.G3767G2424G2036G846G2089G3398G5550G2076G5457G3326G5216G4043G2193G2192G5457G3363G4653G2638G5209G2532G4043G1722G4653G1492G3756G4226G5217
36Put your trust in the light while there is still time; then you will become children of the light." After saying these things, Jesus went away and was hidden from them.G2193G2192G5457G4100G1519G5457G2443G1096G5207G5457G5023G2980G2424G565G2532G2928G575G846

The Unbelief of the People

37But despite all the miraculous signs Jesus had done, most of the people still did not believe in him.G1161G846G4160G5118G4592G1715G846G4100G3756G1519G846
38This is exactly what Isaiah the prophet had predicted: "LORD, who has believed our message? To whom has the LORD revealed his powerful arm?"cG2443G3056G2268G4396G4137G3739G2036G2962G5101G4100G2257G189G2532G5101G1023G2962G601
39But the people couldn't believe, for as Isaiah also said,G5124G1223G1410G3756G4100G3754G2268G2036G3825
40"The Lord has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts—so that their eyes cannot see, and their hearts cannot understand, and they cannot turn to me and have me heal them."cG5186G846G3788G2532G4456G846G2588G3363G1492G3363G1492G3788G2532G3539G2588G2532G1994G2532G2390G846
41Isaiah was referring to Jesus when he said this, because he saw the future and spoke of the Messiah's glory.G5023G2036G2268G3753G1492G846G1391G2532G2980G4012G846
42Many people did believe in him, however, including some of the Jewish leaders. But they wouldn't admit it for fear that the Pharisees would expel them from the synagogue.G3676G3305G1537G758G2532G4183G4100G1519G846G235G1223G5330G3670G3756G3670G3363G1096G656
43For they loved human praise more than the praise of God.G1063G25G1391G444G3123G2260G1391G2316
44Jesus shouted to the crowds, "If you trust me, you are trusting not only me, but also God who sent me.G1161G2424G2896G2532G2036G4100G1519G1691G4100G3756G1519G1691G235G1519G3992G3165
45For when you see me, you are seeing the one who sent me.G2532G2334G1691G2334G3992G3165
46I have come as a light to shine in this dark world, so that all who put their trust in me will no longer remain in the dark.G1473G2064G5457G1519G2889G3363G3956G4100G1519G1691G3306G3363G3306G1722G4653
47I will not judge those who hear me but don't obey me, for I have come to save the world and not to judge it.G2532G3362G5100G191G3450G4487G2532G4100G3362G1473G2919G846G3756G1063G2064G3756G2443G2919G2889G235G2443G4982G2889
48But all who reject me and my message will be judged on the day of judgment by the truth I have spoken.G114G1691G2532G2983G3361G3450G4487G2192G2919G846G3056G3739G2980G1565G2919G846G1722G2078G2250
49I don't speak on my own authority. The Father who sent me has commanded me what to say and how to say it.G3754G1473G2980G3756G2980G1537G1683G235G3962G3992G3165G846G1325G3427G1785G5101G2036G2532G5101G2980
50And I know his commands lead to eternal life; so I say whatever the Father tells me to say."G2532G1492G3754G846G1785G2076G2222G166G3739G1473G2980G3767G2531G3962G2046G3427G3779G2980

108[A song. A psalm of David.] My heart is confident in you, O God; no wonder I can sing your praises with all my heart!H7892H4210H1732H430H3820H3559H7891H2167H3519
2Wake up, lyre and harp! I will wake the dawn with my song.H5782H5035H3658H5782H7837
3I will thank you, Lord, among all the people. I will sing your praises among the nations.H3034H3068H5971H2167H3816
4For your unfailing love is higher than the heavens. Your faithfulness reaches to the clouds.H2617H1419H8064H571H7834
5Be exalted, O God, above the highest heavens. May your glory shine over all the earth.H7311H430H8064H3519H776
6Now rescue your beloved people. Answer and save us by your power.H3039H2502H3467H3225H6030
7God has promised this by his holinessc. “I will divide up Shechem with joy. I will measure out the valley of Succoth.H430H1696H6944H5937H2505H7927H4058H6010H5523
8Gilead is mine, and Manasseh, too. Ephraim, my helmet, will produce my warriors, and Judah, my scepter, will produce my kings.H1568H4519H669H4581H7218H3063H2710
9But Moab, my washbasin, will become my servant, and I will wipe my feet on Edom and shout in triumph over Philistia.”H4124H7366H5518H123H7993H5275H6429H7321
10Who will bring me into the fortified city? Who will bring me victory over Edom?H2986H4013H5892H5148H123
11Have you rejected us, O God? Will you no longer march with our armies?H430H2186H430H3318H6635
12Oh, please help us against our enemies, for all human help is useless.H3051H5833H6862H7723H8668H120
13With God’s help we will do mighty things, for he will trample down our foes.H430H6213H2428H947H6862
