19Then Pilate had Jesus flogged with a lead-tipped whip.G5119G4091G3767G2983G2424G2532G3146 2The soldiers wove a crown of thorns and put it on his head, and they put a purple robe on him.G2532G4757G4120G4735G1537G173G2007G846G2776G2532G4016G846G4210G2440 3"Hail! King of the Jews!" they mocked, as they slapped him across the face.G2532G3004G5463G935G2453G2532G1325G846G4475 4Pilate went outside again and said to the people, "I am going to bring him out to you now, but understand clearly that I find him not guilty."G4091G3767G1831G1854G3825G2532G3004G846G2396G71G846G1854G5213G2443G1097G3754G2147G3762G156G1722G846 5Then Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate said, "Look, here is the man!"G3767G1831G2424G1854G5409G4735G174G2532G4210G2440G2532G3004G846G2396G444 6When they saw him, the leading priests and Temple guards began shouting, "Crucify him! Crucify him!" "Take him yourselves and crucify him," Pilate said. "I find him not guilty."G3753G749G3767G2532G5257G1492G846G2905G3004G4717G4717G4091G3004G846G2983G5210G846G2532G4717G1063G1473G2147G3756G156G1722G846 7The Jewish leaders replied, "By our law he ought to die because he called himself the Son of God."G2453G611G846G2249G2192G3551G2532G2596G2257G3551G3784G599G3754G4160G1438G5207G2316 8When Pilate heard this, he was more frightened than ever.G3753G4091G3767G191G5126G3056G5399G3123G5399 9He took Jesus back into the headquartersc again and asked him, "Where are you from?" But Jesus gave no answer.G2532G1525G3825G1519G4232G2532G3004G2424G4159G1488G4771G1161G2424G1325G846G3756G612 10"Why don't you talk to me?" Pilate demanded. "Don't you realize that I have the power to release you or crucify you?"G3767G3004G4091G846G2980G3756G1698G1492G3756G3754G2192G1849G4717G4571G2532G2192G1849G630G4571 11Then Jesus said, "You would have no power over me at all unless it were given to you from above. So the one who handed me over to you has the greater sin."G2424G611G2192G3756G1849G3762G2596G1700G1508G2258G1325G4671G509G5124G1223G3860G3165G4671G2192G3187G266 12Then Pilate tried to release him, but the Jewish leaders shouted, "If you release this man, you are no 'friend of Caesar.'c Anyone who declares himself a king is a rebel against Caesar."G1537G5127G4091G2212G630G846G1161G2453G2896G3004G1437G630G5126G630G1488G3756G2541G5384G3956G4160G846G935G483G2541 13When they said this, Pilate brought Jesus out to them again. Then Pilate sat down on the judgment seat on the platform that is called the Stone Pavementc.G4091G3767G191G5126G3056G71G2424G1854G2532G2523G1909G968G1519G5117G3004G3038G1161G1447G1042 14It was now about noon on the day of preparation for the Passover. And Pilate said to the peoplec, "Look, here is your king!"G1161G2258G3904G3957G1161G5616G1623G5610G2532G3004G2453G2396G5216G935 15"Away with him," they yelled. "Away with him! Crucify him!" "What? Crucify your king?" Pilate asked. "We have no king but Caesar," the leading priests shouted back.G1161G2905G142G142G4717G846G4091G3004G846G4717G5216G935G749G611G2192G3756G935G1508G2541

The Crucifixion

16Then Pilate turned Jesus over to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus away.G5119G3860G846G3767G846G2443G4717G1161G3880G2424G2532G520 17Carrying the cross by himself, he went to the place called Place of the Skullc.G2532G941G846G4716G1831G1519G5117G3004G2898G3739G3004G1447G1115 18There they nailed him to the cross. Two others were crucified with him, one on either side, with Jesus between them.G3699G4717G846G2532G1417G243G3326G846G2532G1782G1782G1161G2424G3319 19And Pilate posted a sign over him that read, "Jesus of Nazarethc, the King of the Jews."G1161G2532G4091G1125G5102G2532G5087G1909G4716G1161G1125G2258G2424G3480G935G2453 20The place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and the sign was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek, so that many people could read it.G5126G5102G3767G314G4183G2453G3754G5117G3699G2424G4717G2258G1451G4172G2532G2258G1125G1447G1676G4515 21Then the leading priests objected and said to Pilate, "Change it from 'The King of the Jews' to 'He said, I am King of the Jews.'"G3767G3004G749G2453G4091G1125G3361G935G2453G235G3754G1565G2036G1510G935G2453 22Pilate replied, "No, what I have written, I have written."G4091G611G3739G1125G1125 23When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they divided his clothes among the four of them. They also took his robe, but it was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.G3767G4757G3753G4717G2424G2983G846G2440G2532G4160G5064G3313G1538G4757G3313G2532G5509G1161G5509G2258G729G5307G1537G509G1223G3650 24So they said, "Rather than tearing it apart, let's throw dicec for it." This fulfilled the Scripture that says, "They divided my garments among themselves and threw dice for my clothing." So that is what they did.G2036G3767G4314G240G4977G3361G4977G846G235G2975G4012G846G5101G2071G2443G1124G4137G3588G3004G1266G3450G2440G1438G2532G1909G3450G2441G906G2819G5023G3303G3767G4757G4160 25Standing near the cross were Jesus' mother, and his mother's sister, Mary (the wife of Clopas), and Mary Magdalene.G1161G2476G3844G4716G2424G846G3384G2532G846G3384G79G3137G3588G2832G2532G3137G3094 26When Jesus saw his mother standing there beside the disciple he loved, he said to her, "Dear woman, here is your son."G2424G3767G1492G3384G2532G3101G3936G3739G25G3004G846G3384G1135G2400G4675G5207 27And he said to this disciple, "Here is your mother." And from then on this disciple took her into his home.G1534G3004G3101G2400G4675G3384G2532G575G1565G5610G3101G2983G846G1519G2398

The Death of Jesus

28Jesus knew that his mission was now finished, and to fulfill Scripture he said, "I am thirsty."cG3326G5124G2424G1492G3754G3956G5055G2235G5055G2443G1124G5048G3004G1372 29A jar of sour wine was sitting there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put it on a hyssop branch, and held it up to his lips.G3767G2749G4632G3324G3690G1161G4130G4699G3690G2532G4060G5301G4374G846G4750 30When Jesus had tasted it, he said, "It is finished!" Then he bowed his head and released his spirit.G3753G2424G3767G2983G3690G2036G5055G2532G2827G2776G3860G4151 31It was the day of preparation, and the Jewish leaders didn't want the bodies hanging there the next day, which was the Sabbath c. So they asked Pilate to hasten their deaths by ordering that their legs be broken. Then their bodies could be taken down.G2453G3767G1893G2258G2258G3904G3363G4983G3306G3363G3306G1909G4716G1722G4521G1063G1565G4521G2258G3173G2250G2065G4091G2443G846G4628G2608G2532G142 32So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the two men crucified with Jesus.G3767G2064G4757G2532G2608G4628G3303G4413G2532G243G3588G4957G846 33But when they came to Jesus, they saw that he was already dead, so they didn't break his legs.G1161G5613G2064G1909G2424G1492G846G2348G2235G2608G3756G846G4628 34One of the soldiers, however, pierced his side with a spear, and immediately blood and water flowed out.G235G1520G4757G3057G3572G846G4125G2532G2117G1831G129G2532G5204 35(This report is from an eyewitness giving an accurate account. He speaks the truth so that you also can believec.)G2532G3708G3140G2532G846G3141G2076G228G2548G1492G3754G3004G227G2443G5210G4100 36These things happened in fulfillment of the Scriptures that say, "Not one of his bones will be broken,"cG1063G5023G1096G2443G1124G4137G3747G846G4937G3756G4937 37and "They will look on the one they pierced."cG2532G3825G2087G1124G3004G3700G1519G3739G1574

The Burial of Jesus

38Afterward Joseph of Arimathea, who had been a secret disciple of Jesus (because he feared the Jewish leaders), asked Pilate for permission to take down Jesus' body. When Pilate gave permission, Joseph came and took the body away.G1161G3326G5023G2501G575G707G5607G3101G2424G1161G2928G1223G5401G2453G2065G4091G2443G142G4983G2424G2532G4091G2010G2064G3767G2532G142G4983G2424 39With him came Nicodemus, the man who had come to Jesus at night. He brought seventy-five poundsc of perfumed ointment made from myrrh and aloes.G1161G2064G2532G3530G3588G4412G2064G4314G2424G3571G5342G3395G4666G2532G250G5616G1540G3046 40Following Jewish burial custom, they wrapped Jesus' body with the spices in long sheets of linen cloth.G3767G2983G4983G2424G2532G1210G846G3608G3326G759G2531G1485G2453G2076G1779 41The place of crucifixion was near a garden, where there was a new tomb, never used before.G1161G1722G5117G3699G4717G2258G2779G2532G1722G2779G2537G3419G1722G3739G5087G3764G3762G3764G5087 42And so, because it was the day of preparation for the Jewish Passoverc and since the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there.G1563G5087G2424G3767G1223G2453G3904G3754G3419G2258G1451

The Resurrection

20Early on Sunday morningc, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and found that the stone had been rolled away from the entrance.G1161G3391G4521G2064G3137G3094G4404G5607G2089G4653G1519G3419G2532G991G3037G142G1537G3419 2She ran and found Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved. She said, "They have taken the Lord's body out of the tomb, and we don't know where they have put him!"G3767G5143G2532G2064G4314G4613G4074G2532G4314G243G3101G3739G2424G5368G2532G3004G846G142G2962G1537G3419G2532G1492G3756G4226G5087G846 3Peter and the other disciple started out for the tomb.G4074G3767G1831G2532G243G3101G2532G2064G1519G3419 4They were both running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first.G1161G5143G1417G3674G2532G243G3101G4390G5032G4074G2532G2064G4413G1519G3419 5He stooped and looked in and saw the linen wrappings lying there, but he didn't go in.G2532G3879G991G3608G2749G3305G1525G3756G1525 6Then Simon Peter arrived and went inside. He also noticed the linen wrappings lying there,G3767G2064G4613G4074G190G846G2532G1525G1519G3419G2532G2334G3608G2749 7while the cloth that had covered Jesus' head was folded up and lying apart from the other wrappings.G2532G4676G3739G2258G1909G846G2776G3756G2749G3326G3608G235G1794G1519G5117G1520G5565 8Then the disciple who had reached the tomb first also went in, and he saw and believed—G5119G3767G1525G2532G243G3101G3588G2064G4413G1519G3419G2532G1492G2532G4100 9for until then they still hadn't understood the Scriptures that said Jesus must rise from the dead.G1063G3764G1492G3764G1124G3754G846G1163G450G1537G3498 10Then they went home.G3767G3101G565G3825G4314G1438

"Because they have taken away my Lord," she replied, "and I don't know where they have put him."G2532G1565G3004G846G1135G5101G2799G3004G846G3754G142G3450G2962G2532G1492G3756G4226G5087G846 14She turned to leave and saw someone standing there. "Peace be with you," he said.G3767G1565G2250G3798G5607G3391G4521G2532G2374G2808G3699G3101G2258G4863G1223G5401G2453G2064G2424G2532G2476G1519G3319G2532G3004G846G1515G5213 20As he spoke, he showed them the wounds in his hands and his side. They were filled with joy when they saw the Lord!G2532G2036G5124G2036G1166G846G5495G2532G846G4125G3767G5463G3101G5463G1492G2962 21Again he said, "Peace be with you. 24One of the twelve disciples, Thomas (nicknamed the Twin)c, was not with the others when Jesus came.G1161G2381G1520G1537G1427G3004G1324G2258G3756G3326G846G3753G2424G2064 25They told him, "We have seen the Lord!" But he replied, "I won't believe it unless I see the nail wounds in his hands, put my fingers into them, and place my hand into the wound in his side."G243G3101G3767G3004G846G3708G2962G1161G2036G846G3362G1492G1722G846G5495G5179G2247G2532G906G3450G1147G1519G5179G2247G2532G906G3450G5495G1519G846G4125G4100G3364G4100 26Eight days later the disciples were together again, and this time Thomas was with them. 30The disciples saw Jesus do many other miraculous signs in addition to the ones recorded in this book.G2532G4183G243G4592G3303G3767G4160G2424G1799G846G3101G3739G2076G3756G1125G1722G5129G975 31But these are written so that you may continue to believec that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing in him you will have life by the power of his name.G1161G5023G1125G2443G4100G3754G2424G2076G5547G5207G2316G2532G2443G4100G2192G2222G1722G846G3686

Epilogue: Jesus Appears to Seven Disciples

21Later, Jesus appeared again to the disciples beside the Sea of Galileec. This is how it happened.G3326G5023G2424G5319G1438G3825G3101G1909G2281G5085G1161G3779G5319
2Several of the disciples were there—Simon Peter, Thomas (nicknamed the Twin)c, Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples.G2258G3674G4613G4074G2532G2381G3004G1324G2532G3482G575G2580G1056G2532G3588G2199G2532G1417G243G1537G846G3101
3Simon Peter said, "I'm going fishing." "We'll come, too," they all said. So they went out in the boat, but they caught nothing all night.G4613G4074G3004G846G5217G232G3004G846G2249G2532G2064G4862G4671G1831G2532G305G1519G4143G2117G2532G1722G1565G3571G4084G3762
4At dawn Jesus was standing on the beach, but the disciples couldn't see who he was.G1161G4405G1096G2235G1096G2424G2476G1519G123G3305G3101G1492G3756G3754G2076G2424
5He called out, "Fellowsc, have you caught any fish?" "No," they replied.G3767G2424G3004G846G3813G2192G3387G4371G611G846G3756
6Then he said, "Throw out your net on the right-hand side of the boat, and you'll get some!" So they did, and they couldn't haul in the net because there were so many fish in it.G1161G2036G846G906G1350G1519G1188G3313G4143G2532G2147G906G3767G2532G3765G2480G3765G2480G1670G846G575G4128G2486
7Then the disciple Jesus loved said to Peter, "It's the Lord!" When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his tunic (for he had stripped for work), jumped into the water, and headed to shore.G3767G1565G3101G3739G2424G25G3004G4074G2076G2962G3767G4613G4074G191G3754G2076G2962G1241G1903G1063G2258G1131G2532G906G1438G1519G2281
8The others stayed with the boat and pulled the loaded net to the shore, for they were only about a hundred yardsc from shore.G1161G243G3101G2064G4142G1063G2258G3756G3112G575G1093G235G5613G575G1250G4083G4951G1350G2486
9When they got there, they found breakfast waiting for them—fish cooking over a charcoal fire, and some bread.G5613G3767G576G1519G1093G991G439G2532G3795G2749G1945G2532G740
10"Bring some of the fish you've just caught," Jesus said.G2424G3004G846G5342G575G3795G3739G4084G3568G4084
11So Simon Peter went aboard and dragged the net to the shore. There were 153 large fish, and yet the net hadn't torn.G4613G4074G305G2532G1670G1350G1909G1093G3324G3173G2486G1540G4004G5140G2532G5118G5607G3756G1350G4977
12"Now come and have some breakfast!" Jesus said. None of the disciples dared to ask him, "Who are you?" They knew it was the Lord.G2424G3004G846G1205G709G1161G3762G3101G5111G1833G846G5101G1488G4771G1492G3754G2076G2962
13Then Jesus served them the bread and the fish.G2424G3767G2064G2532G2983G740G2532G1325G846G2532G3795G3668
14This was the third time Jesus had appeared to his disciples since he had been raised from the dead.G5124G5319G2235G5154G2424G5319G846G3101G1453G1537G3498
15After breakfast Jesus asked Simon Peter, "Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?c" "Yes, Lord," Peter replied, "you know I love you." "Then feed my lambs," Jesus told him.G3767G3753G709G2424G3004G4613G4074G4613G2495G25G3165G4119G5130G3004G846G3483G2962G4771G1492G3754G5368G4571G3004G846G1006G3450G721
16Jesus repeated the question: "Simon son of John, do you love me?" "Yes, Lord," Peter said, "you know I love you." "Then take care of my sheep," Jesus said.G3004G846G3825G1208G4613G2495G25G3165G3004G846G3483G2962G4771G1492G3754G5368G4571G3004G846G4165G3450G4263
17A third time he asked him, "Simon son of John, do you love me?" Peter was hurt that Jesus asked the question a third time. He said, "Lord, you know everything. You know that I love you." Jesus said, "Then feed my sheep.G3004G846G5154G4613G2495G5368G3165G4074G3076G3754G2036G846G5154G5368G3165G2532G2036G846G2962G4771G1492G3956G4771G1097G3754G5368G4571G2424G3004G846G1006G3450G4263
18"I tell you the truth, when you were young, you were able to do as you liked; you dressed yourself and went wherever you wanted to go. But when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and othersc will dress you and take you where you don't want to go."G281G281G3004G4671G3753G2258G3501G2224G4572G2532G4043G3699G2309G1161G3752G1095G1614G4675G5495G2532G243G2224G4571G2532G5342G3699G2309G3756
19Jesus said this to let him know by what kind of death he would glorify God. Then Jesus told him, "Follow me."G1161G5124G2036G4591G4169G2288G1392G2316G2532G2036G5124G3004G846G190G3427
20Peter turned around and saw behind them the disciple Jesus loved—the one who had leaned over to Jesus during supper and asked, "Lord, who will betray you?"G1161G4074G1994G991G3101G3739G2424G25G190G3739G2532G377G1909G846G4738G1722G1173G2532G2036G2962G5101G2076G3860G4571
21Peter asked Jesus, "What about him, Lord?"G4074G1492G5126G3004G2424G2962G1161G5101G3778
22Jesus replied, "If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? As for you, follow me."G2424G3004G846G1437G2309G846G3306G2193G2064G5101G4314G4571G190G4771G3427
23So the rumor spread among the community of believersc that this disciple wouldn't die. But that isn't what Jesus said at all. He only said, "If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?"G3767G1831G3778G3056G1831G1519G80G3754G1565G3101G599G3756G599G2532G2424G2036G3756G846G3754G599G3756G599G235G1437G2309G846G3306G2193G2064G5101G4314G4571
24This disciple is the one who testifies to these events and has recorded them here. And we know that his account of these things is accurate.G3778G2076G3101G3588G3140G4012G5130G2532G1125G5023G2532G1492G3754G846G3141G2076G227
25Jesus also did many other things. If they were all written down, I suppose the whole world could not contain the books that would be written.G1161G2076G2532G4183G243G3745G2424G4160G3748G1437G1125G2596G1520G3633G3761G2889G846G3761G5562G975G1125G281
