A Discussion about the Sabbath

6One Sabbath day as Jesus was walking through some grainfields, his disciples broke off heads of grain, rubbed off the husks in their hands, and ate the grain.G1161G1096G1722G1207G4521G1207G846G1279G1223G4702G2532G846G3101G5089G4719G2532G2068G5597G5495 2But some Pharisees said, "Why are you breaking the law by harvesting grain on the Sabbath?"G1161G5100G5330G2036G846G5101G4160G3739G1832G3756G1832G4160G1722G4521 3Jesus replied, "Haven't you read in the Scriptures what David did when he and his companions were hungry?G2532G2424G611G4314G846G2036G314G3761G314G3761G5124G3739G1138G4160G3698G846G3983G2532G3588G5607G3326G846 4He went into the house of God and broke the law by eating the sacred loaves of bread that only the priests can eat. He also gave some to his companions."G5613G1525G1519G3624G2316G2532G2983G2532G5315G740G4286G2532G1325G2532G3326G846G3739G1832G3756G1832G5315G1508G2409G3441 5And Jesus added, "The Son of Manc is Lord, even over the Sabbath."G2532G3004G846G3754G5207G444G2076G2962G2532G4521

Jesus Heals on the Sabbath

6On another Sabbath day, a man with a deformed right hand was in the synagogue while Jesus was teaching.G1161G1096G2532G1722G2087G4521G846G1525G1519G4864G2532G1321G2532G1563G2258G444G2532G846G1188G5495G2258G3584 7The teachers of religious law and the Pharisees watched Jesus closely. If he healed the man's hand, they planned to accuse him of working on the Sabbath.G1161G1122G2532G5330G3906G846G1487G2323G1722G4521G2443G2147G2724G846 8But Jesus knew their thoughts. He said to the man with the deformed hand, "Come and stand in front of everyone." So the man came forward.G1161G846G1492G846G1261G2532G2036G444G3588G2192G3584G5495G1453G2532G2476G1519G3319G1161G450G2476 9Then Jesus said to his critics, "I have a question for you. Does the law permit good deeds on the Sabbath, or is it a day for doing evil? Is this a day to save life or to destroy it?"G3767G2036G2424G4314G846G1905G5209G5101G1832G4521G15G2228G2554G4982G5590G2228G622 10He looked around at them one by one and then said to the man, "Hold out your hand." So the man held out his hand, and it was restored!G2532G4017G846G3956G2036G444G1614G4675G5495G1161G4160G3779G2532G846G5495G600G5199G5613G243 11At this, the enemies of Jesus were wild with rage and began to discuss what to do with him.G1161G846G4130G454G2532G1255G4314G240G5101G302G4160G2424

Jesus Chooses the Twelve Apostles

12One day soon afterward Jesus went up on a mountain to pray, and he prayed to God all night.G1161G1096G1722G5025G2250G1831G1519G3735G4336G2532G1273G2258G1722G4335G2316 13At daybreak he called together all of his disciples and chose twelve of them to be apostles. Here are their names.G2532G3753G1096G2250G4377G846G3101G2532G575G846G1586G1427G3739G2532G3687G652 14Simon (whom he named Peter), Andrew (Peter's brother), James, John, Philip, Bartholomew,G4613G3739G2532G3687G4074G2532G406G846G80G2385G2532G2491G5376G2532G918 15Matthew, Thomas, James (son of Alphaeus), Simon (who was called the zealot),G3156G2532G2381G2385G3588G256G2532G4613G2564G2208 16Judas (son of James), Judas Iscariot (who later betrayed him).G2455G2385G2532G2455G2469G3739G2532G1096G4273

Crowds Follow Jesus

17When they came down from the mountain, the disciples stood with Jesus on a large, level area, surrounded by many of his followers and by the crowds. There were people from all over Judea and from Jerusalem and from as far north as the seacoasts of Tyre and Sidon.G2532G2597G3326G846G2476G1909G3977G5117G2532G3793G846G3101G2532G4183G4128G2992G575G3956G2449G2532G2419G2532G3882G5184G2532G4605G3739G2064G191G846G2532G2390G575G846G3554 18They had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases; and those troubled by evilc spirits were healed.G2532G3791G5259G169G4151G2532G2323 19Everyone tried to touch him, because healing power went out from him, and he healed everyone.G2532G3956G3793G2212G680G846G3754G1831G1411G3844G846G2532G2390G3956

The Beatitudes

20Then Jesus turned to his disciples and said, "God blesses you who are poor, for the Kingdom of God is yours.G2532G846G1869G846G3788G1519G846G3101G3004G3107G4434G3754G5212G2076G932G2316 21God blesses you who are hungry now, for you will be satisfied. God blesses you who weep now, for in due time you will laugh.G3107G3983G3568G3754G5526G3107G2799G3568G3754G1070 22What blessings await you when people hate you and exclude you and mock you and curse you as evil because you follow the Son of Man.G3107G2075G3752G444G3404G5209G2532G3752G873G5209G2532G3679G2532G1544G5216G3686G5613G4190G5207G444G1752 23When that happens, be happy! Yes, leap for joy! For a great reward awaits you in heaven. And remember, their ancestors treated the ancient prophets that same way.G5463G1722G1565G2250G2532G4640G1063G2400G5216G3408G4183G1722G3772G1063G2596G5024G4160G846G3962G4396

Sorrows Foretold

24"What sorrow awaits you who are rich, for you have your only happiness now.G4133G3759G5213G4145G3754G568G5216G3874 25What sorrow awaits you who are fat and prosperous now, for a time of awful hunger awaits you. What sorrow awaits you who laugh now, for your laughing will turn to mourning and sorrow.G3759G5213G1705G3754G3983G3759G5213G1070G3568G3754G3996G2532G2799 26What sorrow awaits you who are praised by the crowds, for their ancestors also praised false prophets.G3759G5213G3752G3956G444G2036G2573G5209G1063G5024G2596G4160G846G3962G5578

Love for Enemies

27"But to you who are willing to listen, I say, love your enemies! Do good to those who hate you.G235G3004G5213G3588G191G25G5216G2190G4160G2573G3588G3404G5209 28Bless those who curse you. Pray for those who hurt you.G2127G2672G5213G2532G4336G5228G1908G5209 29If someone slaps you on one cheek, offer the other cheek also. If someone demands your coat, offer your shirt also.G5180G4571G1909G4600G3930G2532G243G2532G575G142G4675G2440G2967G3361G5509G2532 30Give to anyone who asks; and when things are taken away from you, don't try to get them back.G1161G1325G3956G154G4571G2532G575G142G4674G523G3361G523 31Do to others as you would like them to do to you.G2532G2531G2309G2443G444G4160G5213G4160G5210G2532G846G3668 32"If you love only those who love you, why should you get credit for that? Even sinners love those who love them!G2532G1487G25G25G5209G4169G5485G2076G5213G1063G268G2532G25G25G846 33And if you do good only to those who do good to you, why should you get credit? Even sinners do that much!G2532G1437G15G15G5209G4169G5485G2076G5213G1063G268G4160G2532G846 34And if you lend money only to those who can repay you, why should you get credit? Even sinners will lend to other sinners for a full return.G2532G1437G1155G3844G3739G1679G1679G618G4169G5485G2076G5213G1063G268G2532G1155G268G2443G618G2470G618 35"Love your enemies! Do good to them. Lend to them without expecting to be repaid. Then your reward from heaven will be very great, and you will truly be acting as children of the Most High, for he is kind to those who are unthankful and wicked.G4133G25G5216G2190G2532G15G2532G1155G560G3367G560G2532G5216G3408G2071G4183G2532G2071G5207G5310G3754G846G2076G5543G1909G884G2532G4190 36You must be compassionate, just as your Father is compassionate.G1096G3767G3629G2531G5216G3962G2532G2076G3629

Do Not Judge Others

37"Do not judge others, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn others, or it will all come back against you. Forgive others, and you will be forgiven.G2532G2919G3361G2532G2919G3364G2919G2613G3361G2532G2613G3364G2613G630G2532G630 38Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full—pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get backc."G1325G2532G1325G5213G2570G3358G4085G2532G4531G2532G5240G1325G1519G5216G2859G1063G846G3358G3739G3354G488G5213G488 39Then Jesus gave the following illustration: "Can one blind person lead another? Won't they both fall into a ditch?G1161G2036G3850G846G3385G1410G5185G3594G5185G297G3780G297G4098G1519G999 40Studentsc are not greater than their teacher. But the student who is fully trained will become like the teacher.G3101G2076G3756G5228G846G1320G1161G3956G2675G2071G5613G846G1320 41"And why worry about a speck in your friend's eyec when you have a log in your own?G1161G5101G991G2595G1722G4675G80G3788G1161G2657G3756G1385G1722G2398G3788 42How can you think of saying, 'Friendc, let me help you get rid of that speck in your eye,' when you can't see past the log in your own eye? Hypocrite! First get rid of the log in your own eye; then you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your friend's eye.G2228G4459G1410G3004G4675G80G80G863G1544G2595G1722G4675G3788G991G846G991G3756G1385G1722G4675G3788G5273G1544G4412G1385G1537G4675G3788G2532G5119G1227G1544G2595G1722G4675G80G3788

The Tree and Its Fruit

43"A good tree can't produce bad fruit, and a bad tree can't produce good fruit.G1063G2570G1186G2076G4160G3756G4160G4550G2590G3761G4160G4550G1186G4160G2570G2590 44A tree is identified by its fruit. Figs are never gathered from thornbushes, and grapes are not picked from bramble bushes.G1063G1538G1186G1097G1537G2398G2590G1063G1537G173G3756G4816G4810G3761G1537G942G5166G4718 45A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart. What you say flows from what is in your heart.G18G444G1537G18G2344G846G2588G4393G18G2532G4190G444G1537G4190G2344G846G2588G4393G4190G1063G1537G4051G2588G846G4750G2980

Building on a Solid Foundation

46"So why do you keep calling me 'Lord, Lord!' when you don't do what I say?G1161G5101G2564G3165G2962G2962G2532G4160G3756G3739G3004 47I will show you what it's like when someone comes to me, listens to my teaching, and then follows it.G3956G2064G4314G3165G2532G191G3450G3056G2532G4160G846G5263G5213G5101G2076G3664 48It is like a person building a house who digs deep and lays the foundation on solid rock. When the floodwaters rise and break against that house, it stands firm because it is well built.G2076G3664G444G3739G3618G3614G2532G4626G900G2532G5087G2310G1909G4073G1161G4132G1096G4215G4366G1565G3614G2532G2480G3756G4531G846G1063G2311G1909G4073 49But anyone who hears and doesn't obey is like a person who builds a house without a foundation. When the floods sweep down against that house, it will collapse into a heap of ruins."G1161G191G2532G4160G3361G2076G3664G444G5565G2310G3618G3614G1909G1093G4366G3739G4215G4366G2532G2112G4098G2532G4485G1565G3614G1096G3173

The Faith of a Roman Officer

7When Jesus had finished saying all this to the people, he returned to Capernaum.G1161G1893G4137G3956G846G4487G1519G189G2992G1525G1519G2584 2At that time the highly valued slave of a Roman officerc was sick and near death.G1161G5100G1543G1401G3739G2258G1784G846G2192G2560G3195G5053 3When the officer heard about Jesus, he sent some respected Jewish elders to ask him to come and heal his slave.G1161G191G4012G2424G649G4314G846G4245G2453G2065G846G3704G2064G1295G846G1401 4So they earnestly begged Jesus to help the man. "If anyone deserves your help, he does," they said,G1161G3854G4314G2424G3870G846G4709G3004G3754G2076G514G3739G3930G5124 5"for he loves the Jewish people and even built a synagogue for us."G1063G25G2257G1484G2532G846G3618G2254G4864 6So Jesus went with them. But just before they arrived at the house, the officer sent some friends to say, "Lord, don't trouble yourself by coming to my home, for I am not worthy of such an honor.G1161G2424G4198G4862G846G1161G846G568G2235G3756G3112G575G3614G1543G3992G5384G4314G846G3004G846G2962G4660G3361G4660G1063G1510G3756G2425G2443G1525G5259G3450G4721 7I am not even worthy to come and meet you. Just say the word from where you are, and my servant will be healed.G1352G3761G515G1683G515G2064G4314G4571G235G2036G3056G2532G3450G3816G2390 8I know this because I am under the authority of my superior officers, and I have authority over my soldiers. I only need to say, 'Go,' and they go, or 'Come,' and they come. And if I say to my slaves, 'Do this,' they do it."G1063G1473G2532G1510G444G5021G5259G1849G2192G5259G1683G4757G2532G3004G5129G4198G2532G4198G2532G243G2064G2532G2064G2532G3450G1401G4160G5124G2532G4160 9When Jesus heard this, he was amazed. Turning to the crowd that was following him, he said, "I tell you, I haven't seen faith like this in all Israel!"G1161G2424G191G5023G2296G846G2532G4762G2036G3793G190G846G3004G5213G2147G5118G4102G3761G1722G2474 10And when the officer's friends returned to his house, they found the slave completely healed.G2532G3992G5290G1519G3624G2147G1401G5198G770

Jesus Raises a Widow’s Son

11Soon afterward Jesus went with his disciples to the village of Nain, and a large crowd followed him.G2532G1096G1722G1836G4198G1519G4172G2564G3484G2532G2425G846G3101G4848G846G2532G4183G3793 12A funeral procession was coming out as he approached the village gate. The young man who had died was a widow's only son, and a large crowd from the village was with her.G1161G5613G1448G4439G4172G2532G2400G1580G2348G1580G3439G5207G846G3384G2532G846G2258G5503G2532G2425G3793G4172G2258G4862G846 13When the Lord saw her, his heart overflowed with compassion. "Don't cry!" he said.G2532G2962G1492G846G4697G1909G846G2532G2036G846G2799G3361 14Then he walked over to the coffin and touched it, and the bearers stopped. "Young man," he said, "I tell you, get up."G2532G4334G680G4673G1161G941G2476G2532G2036G3495G3004G4671G1453 15Then the dead boy sat up and began to talk! And Jesus gave him back to his mother.G2532G3498G339G2532G756G2980G2532G1325G846G846G3384 16Great fear swept the crowd, and they praised God, saying, "A mighty prophet has risen among us," and "God has visited his people today."G1161G2983G5401G537G2532G1392G2316G3004G3754G3173G4396G1453G1722G2254G2532G3754G2316G1980G846G2992 17And the news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the surrounding countryside.G2532G3778G3056G4012G846G1831G1722G3650G2449G2532G1722G3956G4066

Jesus and John the Baptist

18The disciples of John the Baptist told John about everything Jesus was doing. So John called for two of his disciples,G2532G3101G2491G518G846G4012G3956G5130 19and he sent them to the Lord to ask him, "Are you the Messiah we've been expectingc, or should we keep looking for someone else?"G2532G2491G4341G1417G5100G846G3101G3992G4314G2424G3004G1488G4771G2064G2228G4328G243 20John's two disciples found Jesus and said to him, "John the Baptist sent us to ask, 'Are you the Messiah we've been expecting, or should we keep looking for someone else?'"G1161G435G3854G4314G846G2036G2491G910G649G2248G4314G4571G3004G1488G4771G2064G2228G4328G243 21At that very time, Jesus cured many people of their diseases, illnesses, and evil spirits, and he restored sight to many who were blind.G1161G1722G846G5610G2323G4183G575G3554G2532G3148G2532G4190G4151G2532G4183G5185G5483G991 22Then he told John's disciples, "Go back to John and tell him what you have seen and heard—the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised to life, and the Good News is being preached to the poor.G2532G2424G611G2036G846G4198G518G2491G3739G1492G2532G191G3754G5185G308G5560G4043G3015G2511G2974G191G3498G1453G4434G2097 23And tell him, 'God blesses those who do not turn away because of mec.'"G2532G3107G2076G3739G4624G3362G4624G1722G1698 24After John's disciples left, Jesus began talking about him to the crowds. "What kind of man did you go into the wilderness to see? Was he a weak reed, swayed by every breath of wind?G1161G32G2491G565G756G3004G4314G3793G4012G2491G5101G1831G1519G2048G2300G2563G4531G5259G417 25Or were you expecting to see a man dressed in expensive clothes? No, people who wear beautiful clothes and live in luxury are found in palaces.G235G5101G1831G1492G444G294G1722G3120G2440G2400G1722G1741G2441G2532G5225G5172G1526G1722G933 26Were you looking for a prophet? Yes, and he is more than a prophet.G235G5101G1831G1492G4396G3483G3004G5213G2532G4055G4396 27John is the man to whom the Scriptures refer when they say, 'Look, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, and he will prepare your way before you.'cG3778G2076G4012G3739G1125G2400G1473G649G3450G32G4253G4675G4383G3739G2680G4675G3598G1715G4675 28I tell you, of all who have ever lived, none is greater than John. Yet even the least person in the Kingdom of God is greater than he is!"G1063G3004G5213G1722G1084G1135G2076G3762G3187G4396G3187G2491G910G1161G3398G1722G932G2316G2076G3187G846 29When they heard this, all the people—even the tax collectors—agreed that God's way was rightc, for they had been baptized by John.G2532G3956G2992G191G2532G5057G1344G2316G907G908G2491 30But the Pharisees and experts in religious law rejected God's plan for them, for they had refused John's baptism.G1161G5330G2532G3544G114G1012G2316G1519G1438G907G3361G907G5259G846 31"To what can I compare the people of this generation?" Jesus asked. "How can I describe them?G1161G2962G2036G5101G3767G3666G444G5026G1074G2532G5101G1526G3664 32They are like children playing a game in the public square. They complain to their friends, 'We played wedding songs, and you didn't dance, so we played funeral songs, and you didn't weep.'G1526G3664G3813G2521G1722G58G2532G4377G240G2532G3004G832G5213G2532G3738G3756G3738G2354G5213G2532G2799G3756G2799 33For John the Baptist didn't spend his time eating bread or drinking wine, and you say, 'He's possessed by a demon.'G1063G2491G910G2064G3383G2068G740G3383G4095G3631G2532G3004G2192G1140 34The Son of Manc, on the other hand, feasts and drinks, and you say, 'He's a glutton and a drunkard, and a friend of tax collectors and other sinners!'G5207G444G2064G2068G2532G4095G2532G3004G2400G5314G444G2532G3630G5384G5057G2532G268 35But wisdom is shown to be right by the lives of those who follow itc."G2532G4678G1344G575G3956G846G5043

Jesus Anointed by a Sinful Woman

36One of the Pharisees asked Jesus to have dinner with him, so Jesus went to his home and sat down to eatc.G1161G5100G5330G2065G846G2443G5315G3326G846G2532G1525G1519G5330G3614G347 37When a certain immoral woman from that city heard he was eating there, she brought a beautiful alabaster jar filled with expensive perfume.G2532G2400G1135G1722G4172G3748G2258G268G1921G3754G345G1722G5330G3614G2865G211G3464 38Then she knelt behind him at his feet, weeping. Her tears fell on his feet, and she wiped them off with her hair. Then she kept kissing his feet and putting perfume on them.G2532G2476G3844G846G4228G3694G2799G756G1026G846G4228G1144G2532G1591G2359G846G2776G2532G2705G846G4228G2532G218G3464 39When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, "If this man were a prophet, he would know what kind of woman is touching him. She's a sinner!"G1161G5330G3588G2564G846G1492G2036G1722G1438G3004G3778G1487G2258G4396G302G1097G5101G2532G4217G1135G3748G680G846G3754G2076G268 40Then Jesus answered his thoughts. "Simon," he said to the Pharisee, "I have something to say to you." "Go ahead, Teacher," Simon replied.G2532G2424G611G2036G4314G846G4613G2192G5100G2036G4671G1161G5346G1320G2036 41Then Jesus told him this story: "A man loaned money to two people—500 pieces of silverc to one and 50 pieces to the other.G2258G5100G1157G1417G5533G1520G3784G4001G1220G1161G2087G4004 42But neither of them could repay him, so he kindly forgave them both, canceling their debts. Who do you suppose loved him more after that?"G1161G846G2192G3361G591G5483G297G2036G3767G5101G846G25G846G4119 43Simon answered, "I suppose the one for whom he canceled the larger debt." "That's right," Jesus said.G4613G611G1161G2036G5274G3754G3739G5483G4119G1161G2036G846G2919G3723G2919 44Then he turned to the woman and said to Simon, "Look at this woman kneeling here. When I entered your home, you didn't offer me water to wash the dust from my feet, but she has washed them with her tears and wiped them with her hair.G2532G4762G4314G1135G5346G4613G991G5026G1135G1525G1519G4675G3614G1325G3756G5204G1909G3450G4228G1161G3778G846G1026G3450G4228G1144G2532G1591G2359G846G2776 45You didn't greet me with a kiss, but from the time I first came in, she has not stopped kissing my feet.G1325G3427G3756G5370G1161G3778G846G575G3739G1525G1257G3756G1257G2705G3450G4228 46You neglected the courtesy of olive oil to anoint my head, but she has anointed my feet with rare perfume.G3450G2776G1637G218G3756G218G1161G3778G846G218G3450G4228G3464 47"I tell you, her sins—and they are many—have been forgiven, so she has shown me much love. But a person who is forgiven little shows only little love."G3739G5484G3004G4671G846G266G3588G4183G863G3754G25G4183G1161G3739G3641G863G25G3641 48Then Jesus said to the woman, "Your sins are forgiven."G1161G2036G846G4675G266G863 49The men at the table said among themselves, "Who is this man, that he goes around forgiving sins?"G2532G4873G756G3004G1722G1438G5101G2076G3778G3739G863G266G2532 50And Jesus said to the woman, "Your faith has saved you; go in peace."G1161G2036G4314G1135G4675G4102G4982G4571G4198G1519G1515

115Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to your name goes all the glory for your unfailing love and faithfulness.H3068H8034H5414H3519H2617H571 2Why let the nations say, “Where is their God?”H1471H559H430 3Our God is in the heavens, and he does as he wishes.H430H8064H6213H2654 4Their idols are merely things of silver and gold, shaped by human hands.H6091H3701H2091H4639H120H3027 5They have mouths but cannot speak, and eyes but cannot see.H6310H1696H5869H7200 6They have ears but cannot hear, and noses but cannot smell.H241H8085H639H7306 7They have hands but cannot feel, and feet but cannot walk, and throats but cannot make a sound.H3027H4184H7272H1980H1897H1627 8And those who make idols are just like them, as are all who trust in them.H6213H982 9O Israel, trust the Lord! He is your helper and your shield.H3478H982H3068H5828H4043 10O priests, descendants of Aaron, trust the Lord! He is your helper and your shield.H1004H175H982H3068H5828H4043 11All you who fear the Lord, trust the Lord! He is your helper and your shield.H3373H3068H982H3068H5828H4043 12The Lord remembers us and will bless us. He will bless the people of Israel and bless the priests, the descendants of Aaron.H3068H2142H1288H1288H1004H3478H1288H1004H175 13He will bless those who fear the Lord, both great and lowly.H1288H3373H3068H6996H1419 14May the Lord richly bless both you and your children.H3068H3254H1121 15May you be blessed by the Lord, who made heaven and earth.H1288H3068H6213H8064H776 16The heavens belong to the Lord, but he has given the earth to all humanity.H8064H8064H3068H776H5414H1121H120 17The dead cannot sing praises to the Lord, for they have gone into the silence of the grave.H4191H1984H3050H3381H1745 18But we can praise the Lord both now and forever! Praise the Lord!H1288H3050H5704H5769H1984H3050
