The Flood Recedes

8But God remembered Noah and all the wild animals and livestock with him in the boat. He sent a wind to blow across the earth, and the floodwaters began to recede.H430H2142H5146H2416H929H8392H430H5674H7307H5674H5921H776H4325H79182The underground waters stopped flowing, and the torrential rains from the sky were stopped.H4599H8415H699H8064H5534H1653H8064H36073So the floodwaters gradually receded from the earth. After 150 days,H4325H7725H776H1980H7725H7097H3967H2572H3117H4325H26374exactly five months from the time the flood beganc, the boat came to rest on the mountains of Ararat.H8392H5117H7637H2320H6240H7651H3117H2320H2022H7805Two and a half months laterc, as the waters continued to go down, other mountain peaks became visible.H4325H2637H1980H5704H6224H2320H6224H259H2320H7218H2022H72006After another forty days, Noah opened the window he had made in the boatH7093H705H3117H5146H6605H2474H8392H62137and released a raven. The bird flew back and forth until the floodwaters on the earth had dried up.H7971H6158H3318H3318H7725H4325H3001H7768He also released a dove to see if the water had receded and it could find dry ground.H7971H3123H7200H4325H7043H6440H1279But the dove could find no place to land because the water still covered the ground. So it returned to the boat, and Noah held out his hand and drew the dove back inside.H3123H4672H4494H3709H7272H7725H8392H4325H6440H776H7971H3027H3947H935H839210After waiting another seven days, Noah released the dove again.H2342H312H7651H3117H3254H7971H3123H839211This time the dove returned to him in the evening with a fresh olive leaf in its beak. Then Noah knew that the floodwaters were almost gone.H3123H935H6256H6153H6310H2132H5929H2965H5146H3045H4325H7043H77612He waited another seven days and then released the dove again. This time it did not come back.H3176H312H7651H3117H7971H3123H7725H3254H575013Noah was now 601 years old. On the first day of the new year, ten and a half months after the flood beganc, the floodwaters had almost dried up from the earth. Noah lifted back the covering of the boat and saw that the surface of the ground was drying.H8337H3967H8141H7223H259H2320H4325H2717H776H5146H5493H4372H8392H7200H6440H127H271714Two more months went byc, and at last the earth was dry!H8145H2320H7651H6242H3117H2320H776H300115Then God said to Noah,H430H1696H5146H55916"Leave the boat, all of you—you and your wife, and your sons and their wives.H3318H8392H802H1121H1121H80217Release all the animals—the birds, the livestock, and the small animals that scurry along the ground—so they can be fruitful and multiply throughout the earth."H3318H2416H1320H5775H929H7431H7430H776H8317H776H6509H7235H77618So Noah, his wife, and his sons and their wives left the boat.H5146H3318H1121H802H1121H80219And all of the large and small animals and birds came out of the boat, pair by pair.H2416H7431H5775H3605H7430H776H4940H3318H839220Then Noah built an altar to the LORD, and there he sacrificed as burnt offerings the animals and birds that had been approved for that purposec.H5146H1129H4196H3068H3947H2889H929H2889H5775H5927H5930H419621And the LORD was pleased with the aroma of the sacrifice and said to himself, "I will never again curse the ground because of the human race, even though everything they think or imagine is bent toward evil from childhood. I will never again destroy all living things.H3068H7306H5207H7381H3068H559H413H3820H3254H7043H127H120H5668H3336H120H3820H7451H5271H3254H5221H2416H621322As long as the earth remains, there will be planting and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night."H776H3117H2233H7105H7120H2527H7019H2779H3117H3915H7673

God Confirms His Covenant

9Then God blessed Noah and his sons and told them, "Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth.H430H1288H5146H1121H559H6509H7235H4390H776 2All the animals of the earth, all the birds of the sky, all the small animals that scurry along the ground, and all the fish in the sea will look on you with fear and terror. I have placed them in your power.H4172H2844H2416H776H5775H8064H7430H127H1709H3220H3027H5414 3I have given them to you for food, just as I have given you grain and vegetables.H7431H2416H402H3418H6212H5414 4But you must never eat any meat that still has the lifeblood in it.H389H1320H5315H1818H398 5"And I will require the blood of anyone who takes another person's life. If a wild animal kills a person, it must die. And anyone who murders a fellow human must die.H389H1818H5315H1875H3027H2416H1875H3027H120H3027H376H251H1875H5315H120 6If anyone takes a human life, that person's life will also be taken by human hands. For God made human beingsc in his own image.H8210H120H1818H120H1818H8210H6754H430H6213H120 7Now be fruitful and multiply, and repopulate the earth."H6509H7235H8317H776H7235 8Then God told Noah and his sons,H430H559H5146H1121H559 9"I hereby confirm my covenant with you and your descendants,H6965H1285H2233H310 10and with all the animals that were on the boat with you—the birds, the livestock, and all the wild animals—every living creature on earth.H2416H5315H5775H929H2416H776H3318H8392H2416H776 11Yes, I am confirming my covenant with you. Never again will floodwaters kill all living creatures; never again will a flood destroy the earth."H6965H1285H1320H3772H4325H3999H3999H7843H776 12Then God said, "I am giving you a sign of my covenant with you and with all living creatures, for all generations to come.H430H559H226H1285H589H5414H2416H5315H5769H1755 13I have placed my rainbow in the clouds. It is the sign of my covenant with you and with all the earth.H5414H7198H6051H226H1285H776 14When I send clouds over the earth, the rainbow will appear in the clouds,H6049H6051H776H7198H7200H6051 15and I will remember my covenant with you and with all living creatures. Never again will the floodwaters destroy all life.H2142H1285H2416H5315H1320H4325H5750H3999H7843H1320 16When I see the rainbow in the clouds, I will remember the eternal covenant between God and every living creature on earth."H7198H6051H7200H2142H5769H1285H996H430H996H2416H5315H1320H776 17Then God said to Noah, "Yes, this rainbow is the sign of the covenant I am confirming with all the creatures on earth."H430H559H5146H226H1285H6965H1320H776

(Ham is the father of Canaan.)H1121H5146H3318H8392H8035H2526H3315H2526H1931H1H3667 19From these three sons of Noah came all the people who now populate the earth.H7969H1121H5146H776H5310 20After the flood, Noah began to cultivate the ground, and he planted a vineyard.H5146H2490H376H127H5193H3754 21One day he drank some wine he had made, and he became drunk and lay naked inside his tent.H8354H3196H7937H1540H8432H168 22Ham, the father of Canaan, saw that his father was naked and went outside and told his brothers.H2526H1H3667H7200H6172H1H5046H8147H251H2351 23Then Shem and Japheth took a robe, held it over their shoulders, and backed into the tent to cover their father. As they did this, they looked the other way so they would not see him naked.H8035H3315H3947H8071H7760H8147H7926H3212H322H3680H6172H1H6440H322H7200H1H6172 24When Noah woke up from his stupor, he learned what Ham, his youngest son, had done.H5146H3364H3196H3045H6996H1121H6213 25Then he cursed Canaan, the son of Ham: "May Canaan be cursed! May he be the lowest of servants to his relatives."H559H779H3667H5650H5650H251 26Then Noah said, "May the LORD, the God of Shem, be blessed, and may Canaan be his servant!H559H1288H3068H430H8035H3667H1961H5650 27May God expand the territory of Japheth! May Japheth share the prosperity of Shemc, and may Canaan be his servant."H430H6601H3315H7931H168H8035H3667H5650 28Noah lived another 350 years after the great flood.H5146H2421H310H3999H7969H3967H8141H2572H8141 29He lived 950 years, and then he died.H3117H5146H8672H3967H8141H2572H8141H4191

The Tower of Babel

11At one time all the people of the world spoke the same language and used the same words.H776H259H8193H259H16972As the people migrated to the east, they found a plain in the land of Babyloniac and settled there.H5265H6924H4672H1237H776H8152H34273They began saying to each other, "Let's make bricks and harden them with fire." (In this region bricks were used instead of stone, and tar was used for mortar.)H559H376H7453H3051H3835H3843H8313H8316H3843H68H2564H1961H25634Then they said, "Come, let's build a great city for ourselves with a tower that reaches into the sky. This will make us famous and keep us from being scattered all over the world."H559H3051H1129H5892H4026H7218H8064H6213H8034H6327H6440H7765But the LORD came down to look at the city and the tower the people were building.H3068H3381H7200H5892H4026H1121H120H11296"Look!" he said. "The people are united, and they all speak the same language. After this, nothing they set out to do will be impossible for them!H3068H559H5971H259H259H8193H2490H6213H3808H3605H1219H2161H62137Come, let's go down and confuse the people with different languages. Then they won't be able to understand each other."H3051H3381H1101H8193H834H8085H376H7453H81938In that way, the LORD scattered them all over the world, and they stopped building the city.H3068H6327H8033H6440H776H2308H1129H58929That is why the city was called Babelc, because that is where the LORD confused the people with different languages. In this way he scattered them all over the world.H8034H7121H894H3068H1101H8193H776H6327H3068H6327H6440H776

The Family of Terah

27This is the account of Terah's family. Terah was the father of Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran was the father of Lot.H8435H8646H8646H3205H87H5152H2039H2039H3205H387628But Haran died in Ur of the Chaldeans, the land of his birth, while his father, Terah, was still living.H2039H4191H6440H1H8646H776H4138H218H377829Meanwhile, Abram and Nahor both married.
