Moab Seduces Israel

25While the Israelites were camped at Acacia Grovec, some of the men defiled themselves by having sexual relations with local Moabite women.H3478H3427H7851H5971H2490H2181H1323H4124 2These women invited them to attend sacrifices to their gods, so the Israelites feasted with them and worshiped the gods of Moab.H7121H5971H2077H430H5971H398H7812H430 3In this way, Israel joined in the worship of Baal of Peor, causing the LORD's anger to blaze against his people.H3478H6775H1187H639H3068H2734H3478 4The LORD issued the following command to Moses: "Seize all the ringleaders and execute them before the LORD in broad daylight, so his fierce anger will turn away from the people of Israel."H3068H559H4872H3947H7218H5971H3363H5048H3068H8121H2740H639H3068H7725H3478 5So Moses ordered Israel's judges, "Each of you must put to death the men under your authority who have joined in worshiping Baal of Peor."H4872H559H8199H3478H2026H376H376H582H6775H1187 6Just then one of the Israelite men brought a Midianite woman into his tent, right before the eyes of Moses and all the people, as everyone was weeping at the entrance of the Tabernaclec.H376H1121H3478H935H7126H251H4084H5869H4872H5869H5712H1121H3478H1058H6607H168H4150 7When Phinehas son of Eleazar and grandson of Aaron the priest saw this, he jumped up and left the assembly. He took a spearH6372H1121H499H1121H175H3548H7200H6965H8432H5712H3947H7420H3027 8and rushed after the man into his tent. Phinehas thrust the spear all the way through the man's body and into the woman's stomach. So the plague against the Israelites was stopped,H935H310H376H3478H6898H1856H8147H376H3478H802H413H6897H4046H6113H1121H3478 9but not before 24,000 people had died.H4191H4046H6242H702H505 10Then the LORD said to Moses,H3068H1696H4872H559 11"Phinehas son of Eleazar and grandson of Aaron the priest has turned my anger away from the Israelites by being as zealous among them as I was. So I stopped destroying all Israel as I had intended to do in my zealous anger.H6372H1121H499H1121H175H3548H7725H2534H7725H1121H3478H7065H7068H8432H3615H1121H3478H7068 12Now tell him that I am making my special covenant of peace with him.H559H5414H1285H7965 13In this covenant, I give him and his descendants a permanent right to the priesthood, for in his zeal for me, his God, he purified the people of Israel, making them right with mec."H2233H310H1285H5769H3550H834H7065H430H3722H1121H3478 14The Israelite man killed with the Midianite woman was named Zimri son of Salu, the leader of a family from the tribe of Simeon.H8034H376H5221H5221H4084H2174H1121H5543H5387H1H1004H8099 15The woman's name was Cozbi; she was the daughter of Zur, the leader of a Midianite clan.H8034H4084H802H5221H3579H1323H6698H7218H523H1H1004H4080 16Then the LORD said to Moses,H3068H1696H4872H559 17"Attack the Midianites and destroy them,H6887H4084H5221 18because they assaulted you with deceit and tricked you into worshiping Baal of Peor, and because of Cozbi, the daughter of a Midianite leader, who was killed at the time of the plague because of what happened at Peor."H6887H5231H5230H1697H6465H1697H3579H1323H5387H4080H269H5221H3117H4046H6465H1697

The Second Registration of Israel’s Troops

26After the plague had ended, the LORD said to Moses and to Eleazar son of Aaron the priest,H310H4046H3068H559H4872H499H1121H175H3548H559
2"From the whole community of Israel, record the names of all the warriors by their families. List all the men twenty years old or older who are able to go to war."H5375H7218H5712H1121H3478H6242H8141H1121H4605H1H1004H3318H6635H3478
3So there on the plains of Moab beside the Jordan River, across from Jericho, Moses and Eleazar the priest issued these instructions to the leaders of Israel.H4872H499H3548H1696H6160H4124H3383H3405H559

55But you must assign the land by lot, and give land to each ancestral tribe according to the number of names on the list.H776H2505H1486H8034H4294H1H5157
56Each grant of land must be assigned by lot among the larger and smaller tribal groups."H6310H1486H5159H2505H7227H4592

58The Libnites, the Hebronites, the Mahlites, the Mushites, and the Korahites were all subclans of the Levites. Now Kohath was the ancestor of Amram,H4940H3881H4940H3846H4940H2276H4940H4250H4940H4188H4940H7145H6955H3205H6019
59and Amram's wife was named Jochebed. She also was a descendant of Levi, born among the Levites in the land of Egypt. Amram and Jochebed became the parents of Aaron, Moses, and their sister, Miriam.H8034H6019H802H3115H1323H3878H3205H3878H4714H3205H6019H175H4872H4813H269

62The men from the Levite clans who were one month old or older numbered 23,000. But the Levites were not included in the registration of the rest of the people of Israel because they were not given an allotment of land when it was divided among the Israelites.H6485H6242H7969H505H2145H2320H1121H4605H6485H8432H1121H3478H5159H5414H8432H1121H3478

65For the LORD had said of them, "They will all die in the wilderness." Not one of them survived except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.H3068H559H4191H4191H4057H3498H376H3612H1121H3312H3091H1121H5126

The Daughters of Zelophehad

27One day a petition was presented by the daughters of Zelophehad—Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. Their father, Zelophehad, was a descendant of Hepher son of Gilead, son of Makir, son of Manasseh, son of Joseph.H7126H1323H6765H1121H2660H1121H1568H1121H4353H1121H4519H4940H4519H1121H3130H8034H1323H4244H5270H2295H4435H8656 2These women stood before Moses, Eleazar the priest, the tribal leaders, and the entire community at the entrance of the Tabernaclec.H5975H6440H4872H6440H499H3548H6440H5387H5712H6607H168H4150H559 3"Our father died in the wilderness," they said. "He was not among Korah's followers, who rebelled against the LORD; he died because of his own sin. But he had no sons.H1H4191H4057H8432H5712H3259H3068H5712H7141H4191H2399H1121 4Why should the name of our father disappear from his clan just because he had no sons? Give us property along with the rest of our relatives."H8034H1H1639H8432H4940H1121H5414H272H8432H251H1 5So Moses brought their case before the LORD.H4872H7126H4941H6440H3068 6And the LORD replied to Moses,H3068H559H4872H559 7"The claim of the daughters of Zelophehad is legitimate. You must give them a grant of land along with their father's relatives. Assign them the property that would have been given to their father.H1323H6765H1696H3651H5414H5414H272H5159H8432H1H251H5159H1H5674 8"And give the following instructions to the people of Israel: If a man dies and has no son, then give his inheritance to his daughters.H1696H1121H3478H559H376H4191H1121H5159H5674H1323 9And if he has no daughter either, transfer his inheritance to his brothers.H1323H5414H5159H251 10If he has no brothers, give his inheritance to his father's brothers.H251H5414H5159H1H251 11But if his father has no brothers, give his inheritance to the nearest relative in his clan. This is a legal requirement for the people of Israel, just as the LORD commanded Moses."H1H251H5414H5159H7607H7138H4940H3423H1121H3478H2708H4941H3068H6680H4872

Joshua Chosen to Lead Israel

12One day the LORD said to Moses, "Climb one of the mountains east of the riverc, and look out over the land I have given the people of Israel.H3068H559H4872H5927H2022H5682H7200H776H5414H1121H3478 13After you have seen it, you will die like your brother, Aaron,H7200H622H5971H175H251H622 14for you both rebelled against my instructions in the wilderness of Zin. When the people of Israel rebelled, you failed to demonstrate my holiness to them at the waters." (These are the waters of Meribah at Kadeshc in the wilderness of Zin.)H4784H6310H4057H6790H4808H5712H6942H4325H5869H4325H4809H6946H4057H6790 15Then Moses said to the LORD,H4872H1696H3068H559 16"O LORD, you are the God who gives breath to all creatures. Please appoint a new man as leader for the community.H3068H430H7307H1320H6485H376H5712 17Give them someone who will guide them wherever they go and will lead them into battle, so the community of the LORD will not be like sheep without a shepherd."H3318H6440H935H6440H3318H935H5712H3068H6629H7462 18The LORD replied, "Take Joshua son of Nun, who has the Spirit in him, and lay your hands on him.H3068H559H4872H3947H3091H1121H5126H376H7307H5564H3027 19Present him to Eleazar the priest before the whole community, and publicly commission him to lead the people.H5975H6440H499H3548H6440H5712H6680H5869 20Transfer some of your authority to him so the whole community of Israel will obey him.H5414H1935H5712H1121H3478H8085 21When direction from the LORD is needed, Joshua will stand before Eleazar the priest, who will use the Urim—one of the sacred lots cast before the LORD—to determine his will. This is how Joshua and the rest of the community of Israel will determine everything they should do."H5975H6440H499H3548H7592H4941H224H6440H3068H6310H3318H6310H935H1121H3478H5712 22So Moses did as the LORD commanded. He presented Joshua to Eleazar the priest and the whole community.H4872H6213H3068H6680H3947H3091H5975H6440H499H3548H6440H5712 23Moses laid his hands on him and commissioned him to lead the people, just as the LORD had commanded through Moses.H5564H3027H6680H3068H1696H3027H4872

48[A song. A psalm of the descendants of Korah.] How great is the LORD, how deserving of praise, in the city of our God, which sits on his holy mountain!H7892H4210H1121H7141H1419H3068H3966H1984H5892H430H2022H6944 2It is high and magnificent; the whole earth rejoices to see it! Mount Zion, the holy mountainc, is the city of the great King!H3303H5131H4885H776H2022H6726H3411H6828H7151H7227H4428 3God himself is in Jerusalem's towers, revealing himself as its defender.H430H3045H759H4869 4The kings of the earth joined forces and advanced against the city.H4428H3259H5674H3162 5But when they saw it, they were stunned; they were terrified and ran away.H7200H8539H926H2648 6They were gripped with terror and writhed in pain like a woman in labor.H7461H270H2427H3205 7You destroyed them like the mighty ships of Tarshish shattered by a powerful east wind.H7665H591H8659H6921H7307 8We had heard of the city's glory, but now we have seen it ourselves—the city of the LORD of Heaven's Armies. It is the city of our God; he will make it safe forever. InterludeH8085H7200H5892H3068H6635H5892H430H430H3559H5704H5769H5542 9O God, we meditate on your unfailing love as we worship in your Temple.H1819H2617H430H7130H1964 10As your name deserves, O God, you will be praised to the ends of the earth. Your strong right hand is filled with victory.H8034H430H8416H7099H776H3225H4390H6664 11Let the people on Mount Zion rejoice. Let all the towns of Judah be glad because of your justice.H2022H6726H8055H1323H3063H1523H4941 12Go, inspect the city of Jerusalemc. Walk around and count the many towers.H5437H6726H5362H5608H4026 13Take note of the fortified walls, and tour all the citadels, that you may describe them to future generations.H7896H3820H2430H6448H759H5608H1755H314 14For that is what God is like. He is our God forever and ever, and he will guide us until we die.H430H430H5769H5703H5090H4192
