ELEVEN, THE

A designation for Jesus’ eleven disciples (Gk. hoi héndeka) in the brief period succeeding Judas’ death and preceding his replacement by Matthias (Acts 1:26). The risen Savior appeared to them on two, possibly three, occasions — at Jerusalem (Luke 24:9, 33), in Galilee (Matt. 28:16), possibly elsewhere (Mark 16:14). At Acts 2:14 Peter is depicted as the representative of the Eleven, an interpretation supported by Codex Bezae (D), which reads “the ten.”
