ISLAND, ISLE

The islands cited in the Bible are those of the Mediterranean Sea; among those specifically mentioned are Caphtor (probably Crete), Cauda, Cyprus, Malta, and Patmos. The KJV frequently translates Heb. ʾîy as “isle” or “island” in passages where the context shows its meaning to be “coast” or “coastland” (so NRSV), i.e., the eastern Mediterranean coastland including areas from Egypt to Phoenicia (e.g., Gen. 10:5; Ps. 97:1); thus the essential meaning of the Hebrew is probably “land adjacent to the sea,” whether on island or mainland.

Prayer Tents is a Christian mission organization that serves Christians around the world and their local bodies to make disciples ("evangelize") more effectively in their communities. Prayer Tents provides resources to enable Christians to form discipleship-focused small groups and make their gatherings known so that other "interested" people may participate and experience Christ in their midst. Our Vision is to make disciples in all nations through the local churches so that anyone seeking God can come to know Him through relationships with other Christians near them.
