TOPHEL

(Heb. tōpel; Gk. Tophol)

A place in the desert east of the Jordan River, in the vicinity of which Moses recollected the law to the Israelites (Deut. 1:1; cf. LXX). Deut. 1:5 places the event in the territory of Moab. Although the precise location is unknown, it may be identified with e-Öafîleh (208027) based on a phonological similarity. Yohanon Aharoni located Tophel on the King’s Highway between Punon and Wadi Zered but S of Moab.
