MATTHIAS

(Gk. Maththías)

One of two persons described as an eyewitness of Jesus’ ministry and a candidate for replacing Judas Iscariot (Acts 1:21-26). Matthias was chosen by prayer and casting lots to become the 12th disciple. Although the text underscores the necessity of choosing this 12th disciple, he is never mentioned again in the NT. The “necessity” was possibly the symbolism of the number 12 representing the people of God as reflected in the tribal organization of Israel. The name is a shortened form of Mattithiah, which means “gift of Yahweh.”

Prayer Tents is a Christian mission organization that serves Christians around the world and their local bodies to make disciples ("evangelize") more effectively in their communities. Prayer Tents provides resources to enable Christians to form discipleship-focused small groups and make their gatherings known so that other "interested" people may participate and experience Christ in their midst. Our Vision is to make disciples in all nations through the local churches so that anyone seeking God can come to know Him through relationships with other Christians near them.
