SHETH

(Heb. šēṯ)

1. Hebrew spelling of Seth, the son of Adam and Eve (Gen. 4:25; 1 Chr. 1:1).

2. “The sons of Sheth,” apparently a designation of Moab in Balaam’s prediction of Moab’s defeat by Israel (Num. 24:17; NRSV “Shethites”). The Hebrew term should perhaps be emended to śĕʾēṯ, “exaltation, defiance” (cf. NIV mg “noisy boasters”), or šēʾṯ, “desolation” (cf. šāʾôn, “tumult” at Jer. 48:45, which deliberately echoes Num. 24:17).
